I breathed in deeply. My two feet were finally planted on Earth. Mazew stood next to me, dressed in his fancy clothes.
Mazew looked at me. "Are you fine being on your own for a few hours?"
I nodded. "Of course. This is San Francisco. I grew up just north of here. I'll be fine."
Mazew placed a hand on my shoulder. "I know. I will see you soon, my dear."
Mazew and I split from each other. I walked down the street, taking everything in. Everything was so much different than what I remember. There was so much high tech stuff. So much had changed since I've been here. Thankfully the Golden Gate Bridge was still there.
I stood on the sidewalk, staring at the bridge. It looked just like remember I had remembered. Someone bumped into me. I shoved them back and glared at them.
It was an attractive man in his mid-forties. He was dressed in an impressive gray uniform.
"Watch where you're going," I snapped.
"I'm so sorry, lass," the man replied in a Scottish accent. "I didn't mean to bump into you."
"It's okay, I guess," I said, brushing it off. "What's your name, by the way?"
"Montgomery Scott," the man replied, "but people call me Scotty. What is your name, lass?"
"Zari," I replied, sticking out my hand. "I'm from just north of here."
"So you know the area."
I nodded. "Yeah. I haven't been here in a while, but I'm glad to be back."
"I am too," Scotty said. "I've been on a five-year mission with Starfleet. I've been working on the USS Enterprise."
I faked surprise. "Wow. That's impressive. What was it like?"
"Stressful," Scotty replied. "I liked it though."
"That's cool," I said. "I have to go. It was nice meeting you, Scotty."
"As to you, Miss Zari," Scotty replied.
He departed and headed towards a large fancy looking building. I smiled to myself as I started walking. It was nice to actually speak to someone in English. I had spent six months talking in Klingon and I had been longing to talk to someone in English.
I walked through the city, enjoying myself. I finally returned to the spot Mazew and I beamed down. Mazew was sitting at a table, waiting patiently. I walked up to him and sat in front of him.
Mazew smiled at me. "Hello, Zari. How was your day?"
"Good," I replied. "I got to see the city. I remember a lot of it but it's different."
Mazew placed a hand on mine. "It'll be okay, Zari."
I nodded, biting my lip. "I know. I'll get over it."
Mazew kissed my hand. "Don't stress, my dear."
I smiled a little. "I won't. I just feel out of place. Like this isn't my home."
Mazew squeezed my hand one last time. "I understand. I hope one day you'll find your home. Whether it's here or not is up to you to decide."
I took a deep breath. "I know. I don't what to do though. I want to be home with people I know but none of them are alive anymore. I don't know if there are any descendants of my family. I only know you and your crew. I guess I'm just confused."
"We could try and find some of your family members," Mazew offered. "So you could get some closure."
I smiled a little. "That would be nice. How much longer are we going to be here?"
"A week," Mazew replied. "The diplomatic talks are going to take a few days and I wanted to give my crewmembers some time off."
"You're a kind leader. When I was in the prison cells, I was told that Klingons were aggressive and mean. I listened to them but I met you and you were different.."
Mazew nodded, a small smile growing on his face. "Klingons can be ruthless but we are not as some may say. We are only aggressive with those who come onto our space or try to attack us. We are quick to anger but we love strongly when it comes to our partners."
I smiled. "You showed me that. I don't like being yelled at, so if you could kindly avoid doing that please."
Mazew nodded. "Of course. Zari, I love you, and I want you to know that I will never hurt you."
"I love you too," I said. "I know you aren't going to do that because you don't seem to hurt anyone you care about. I've only seen a little bit but you care."
Mazew's communicator chirped. He glanced at it. "It's time to return to the ship, Zari."
I nodded. "Okay. Let's go."
