The Ascent
A hollow ripping sound descended the stairs of the almost empty home. Jenny rushed to the stairwell in fear. Her breath stopped abruptly seeing the bright opening where the bathroom once hailed.
Unable to open the doors to leave or getting her mother on the phone to guide she ran to her room. She decided to investigate. In a puerile attempt of protection, she wrapped herself in her sheets.
Jenny's heart was pounding hard as she ascended the stairs. Her footfalls causing each step to cry out in turn. Crying out was the one, and only, reaction to terror she was able to subdue. Reeking of urine, she reached the top step shaking.
"Hello, pretty," was the last she heard; before her heart fell silent.
