Walking towards the "Cab Zone" as I personally like to call it, I became one hundred percent aware about how out parents wouldn't shut up. And of course my lovely mother was dead set in embarrassing me, I will never understand what is it with parents and embarrassing their children. And I'm serious with that one, I will never forget that one time my mom met the mother of my best friend of the third grade. Their conversation went something along the lines of:
"Oh yes, I swear! Damon only has one testicle!" His mother told mine as if they were talking about the weather.
"Oh my God, really?! I don't know what I'd do if my Meggie only had one boob" That was my mom making everything so much better as always.
"I know right? Damon come here! Take down your pants and show Kacie your testicle" Said his mom forcing him to do as told.
I think it's not necessary to specify the fact that we never talked again after that. He avoided me and the confessed that he couldn't be friends with a girl who knew his secret. Way to go mom.
"Oh I totally understand that! You see, when Meggie had her first period she stained her whole bed with blood and when she woke up she ran up to my room crying thinking she was having a hemorrhage" And that ladies and gentlemans it's my cue to shut her up.
"Okay mom, I think they don't really care about that." I said looking at her in a way which would surely make her stop.
"Don't worry Meggie, I won't go around repeating how traumatic was your first experience with periods." Said Colton smirking.
"I'd tell you to go die, but that would be pretty ironic, wouldn't it?"
"It's okay, I've always liked them feisty." I think I hate him.
"Look! A cab big enough to fit us all" Said Colton's mom walking towards the cab, well, a really nice looking van actually.
We got into the taxi, me and Colton sitting together in the back and our mother together in front of us leaving Colton dad alone besides the driver.
"I think this is going to be a fun trip. Don't you agree?" Said Colton smiling at me.
"I don't know, I've never been a huge fan of traveling." I said with all honesty. "And it's not just because of the airplane thing, which I don't really mind that much. Seriously I don't, stop looking at me like that." I continued and glared at him when he started looking at me with that annoying mischievous glint of his when I mentioned the airplane part.
"Well if you're so sure about the as you call it, airplane thing, then why you're not a fan of trips? They're fun" Started Colton, "unless you come for business reasons, if that's the case then I guess it wouldn't be as fun."
"Like I said, I don't know. Maybe it's a comfort zone thing, I like being surrounded by familiarity."
"Oh come on, you got to give your life a little bit more excitement than that." Said Colton making gestures with his hands to prove his point.
"Well since you're so incredibly adventurous, then I'm dying to hear the oh so amazing reason why you came here."
"We came here to look for some medicines that are a little bit hard to find back there in San Francisco actually, right now I'm in the middle of the adventurous search of hope of me getting more time in this world." He said smiling at me looking proud of his answer.
"What are you guys talking so much about? Are you dating now or something?" Asked his mom with a smooth looking smile.
"Or something." Said Colton smirking back at her.
"Ok no, don't." I interrupted their exchange while rolling my eyes at them. "Anyway, which medicines you guys came looking for?"
"Oh, you told her about it?" Said his mom looking a bit taken aback. "Don't worry about it sweetie, you probably wouldn't even understand their names, just like us sometimes." She said while exchanging a sad look with her husband. I could see my mom looking discomforted as well. Definitely this is a sensitive topic for everyone in this car.
I was planning on letting it go until I saw Colton looking out of the window with a distant look, for some reason that made me feel extremely pissed off towards his parents so I started talking before I could really stop myself, "Why do you think I wouldn't understand? Or is it actually because you're the one who doesn't want to understand about them?" I felt Colton looking at me and that just made me speak faster, "I mean yes, I understand he has cancer and that it's hard talking about it, maybe you think you're actually talking about the fact that he will die someday, but guess what? So am I, and you, and everyone. We're all eventually going to die so stop with the unnecessary attitude. Talking about which medicines he needs it's not a crime and I don't think he likes it when you react like that. I know for sure that I wouldn't like it."
I was greeted with awkward silence all around, but when I turned to look at Colton, he was smiling again and in that moment that was all that mattered.
"You did it again Megan, thank you." Said his dad surprising all of us by breaking the silence.
"I don't know what I did, but I don't really need you to thank me."
"You stood up for him again, seems like you're making a habit out of it already." He replied while smiling at me through the review mirror.
"It's not like that," I said while getting mi iPod out of my pocket and putting on one earphone, passing the other one to Colton. "I just can't help saying out loud what I think."
I started the music letting them know I was over with that conversation. I looked at Coltons mom and she seemed deep in thought while my mother had the word "disapproval" all over her face.
We finally arrived to the hotel and I sat down on a chair while my mom did all the check in work. Colton came and sat beside me, we stayed in silence for a few minutes until he finally spoke up.
"I think I heard our parents agreeing on us sharing a room right now."
That definitely got me out of the chair and on my feet in a second. "What!? What do you mean with that? That's just crazy, my mom would never agree to something like that."
Just in that moment my mom came towards us. I grabbed her arm and looked at her with pleading eyes, "please tell me it's a lie that you agree to let me share a room with a complete stranger."
She started laughing at me, "of course it's not a lie Meggie, we just thought it'd be nice for you guys to hang out."
"Mom you're throwing me out at wolves here."
"Come on Megan, I'm not that bad." Said Colton again with that smirk of his. "I'm tired, let's get going to our rooms."
I can't believe this is actually happening. I swear to God my life makes no sense.
