Chapter 5

"The best thing in life to hold on to is each other."

Peeta POV

She just stands there looking at the words I spelt out, at the arrangement that I put so much thought into. There were so many ways I could have proposed but I wanted to do one that seemed personal to us. Also, due to my overwhelming nerves, I don't think I'd be able to actually get the words "marry me" out of my mouth.

I can't do anything but just look at the back of her head for a while and when she slowly turns around to face me, her face is unreadable. Her gaze clicks with mine, grey meeting blue as I try to swallow my nerves in a big gulp.

If she says no, our relationship could be ruined forever. At this thought I start to speak, not through confidence but through fear of losing her, losing the girl who I've always loved and the one who finally loves me back.

'Katniss, I know you think of me as a marriage kind of guy, someone who always dreamed of growing up, falling in love and getting married to a girl but that's not all true. You see, I do want those things but not with "a girl". I want them with you, and only you; it's always been that way. I just want to wake up every day holding you, I want to cook meals for you and bake cheese buns whenever you want them. I want to be the one that's always there to calm you out of your nightmares, I want it in legal writing that you're mine and I'm yours. You've managed to somehow see through all my flaws like my flashbacks and my stupid leg, no one else would do that for me. God, I just love you so much and I don't just want a marriage with anyone, I want a marriage with you.'

Silence wraps around us and is only broken when Katniss takes a shaky breath and lays her hand on my arm, looking at me with a form of pity in her eyes.

This is it. She's going to reject me.

'Oh Peeta I love you so much, I just-'

Before I can stop myself I put a finger to her lips, freezing her words. I can't hear it, no I can't even think about what words she'd use to reject me.

'Kat, don't. Look, I've told you what I wanted, what I've always wanted and if you don't want it then that's fine.' Lies, it's not fine at all, my heart is breaking in two here. 'I don't want you to say yes because you think that's what I want. I want you to want to marry me as much as I want to marry you, please don't pity me.' I break eye contact with her and stare at the ground.

'Peeta, if you think I'd say yes when I didn't mean it, then you don't know me.'

Oh, so she won't even consider say yes to make me happy. Good to know.

'Which, shows you what I mean when I say...yes.'

My heart misses a beat as her words sink into my brain, my eyesight snaps back up to hers again and tears start rolling down my cheeks.

'Yes? You're saying yes to me?' I have to check, I have to check I'm hearing her right. Katniss smiles at me, tears springing from her grey orbs as she nods, 'Yes.'

I fumble in my pocket and finally locate the ring, taking it out I slip it on to her finger which is wet from both of our tears falling as we look down on it.

'I love it. Peeta, it's perfect.'

Smiling, I take her hands in mine, 'You're perfect.'

'You too.' She grins, leaning in towards me. I'm giddy with absolute happiness as my lips collide with hers. I lose grip of her hands and wrap them around the small of her back as hers wrap around my neck bringing us flush against each other. I love the sparks that fly every time we kiss and I know they're will never be a time where those sparks don't fly inside of me when her lips meet mine. We're both still crying but neither of us care, this moment is perfect and more than anything I wish I could freeze it right here, right now and live in it forever.
