She leaned against the wall, already half exhausted.
Every part of the ship she traveled seemed to be infested with the molded creatures. Briefly, she wondered if this was the place they originated from because there hadn't even been half as many at the Baker's property. That and the whole place reeked of the black goo that seemed to be everywhere.
Saran's body perked up when she heard gunshots.
That had been the fourth time in the past twenty minutes, or so she counted. Hopefully, it was Ethan. Hopefully.
A sigh blew past her lips and she mumbled, "Ethan I hope you're okay. I really don't wanna lose you to this place too."
Then, she pushed off the wall and began walking down the hallway again.
If she had to guess by now, she was in the lower decks of the ship. And it looked like more had gone on down here than just repairing the engine or some other vital part of the ship.
Rooms full of strange medical equipment and tools. Different liquids dried and stained the metal floors as empty syringes and bottles rolled in the faint whistling wind.
There had been something more here but she couldn't put her finger on what.
Saran walked on past them and into a hallway. The whole right half of the wall was gone, exposing the ship to the cool swamp air.
Warning bells went off in her head as the sound of a child's laughter echoed around her.
In the pale moonlight, she saw the girl from the Baker's house staring at her. Colorless eyes bored into her very soul and then her mouth stretched into a wicked smile.
"I haven't forgotten what you did to big brother and me. I'll make you pay."
And then, she turned and ran around a corner.
Anger flared up in Saran and she started to run after her when growling sounded up behind her.
Slowly, she turned and looked behind her.
Another big, fat molded monster.
She could smell the putrid bile from where she was and she could hear the sizzle as it hit the floor. It's beady eyes locked onto her and it opened its mouth with a hiss.
A wave of vomit spewed right at her.
Saran shoved herself back just as it splashed where she was standing.
Her mind whirled around as she began to think.
She could stay and try to fight and possibly die or she could run and get to some sort of safety.
The monster brought her back with a thunderous roar. More vomit gathered in its mouth and Saran backed away and began to run.
She heard the crackle and pop as the vomit landed on the floor behind her and then loud thudding footsteps followed after her.
Saran cursed under her breath and began to run harder. And just when she thought she had put a good amount of distance between them, her foot slipped and she went down.
Her body landed on the ground hard and a stringing sensation trailed through on the palm of her right hand.
The roaring sounded up again, much closer this time.
Saran didn't bother looking as she hurriedly gathered herself up and began sprinting again.
She slid around a corner, hoping to find somewhere to go only to find that her only choices were a dead end and another hole in the ship that was too high up for her to jump. And it was already too late to turn back because she could see the outline of the fat molded monster at the entrance.
