“Good morning Jada,” Mrs. Langston said as soon as Abby and I walked through the door. Mrs. Langston was the receptionist and manager of We R Kid’s Daycare. She was recommended by one of Tracey’s teammate when we first got out here, and we’ve been bringing Abby here ever since.
“Hey Mrs. Langston,” I replied as I held Abby’s hand.
“Good morning!” Abby exclaimed. She’s always so cheery in the morning.
“Well good morning little Miss Abby; are you ready for the fun activities today?”
Abby nodded with a huge smile on her face. Today the daycare was taking a trip to the theater to see Frozen. It just came out yesterday so I’m sure the kids will have fun.
I handed Mrs. Langston Abby’s small duffel bag. “I packed her lotion. Can you make sure she puts some on her arms and legs before you guys leave? Her eczema started acting up this morning.”
She nodded, assuring me she will.
I kneeled down to Abby’s level and rubbed her cheek. “Be good.”
She laughed. “I’m always good Mommy.”
That caused me to chuckle. “You’re right. I love you and I will see you later.”
“Love you too.”
She hugged my neck and practically ran down the hall while dragging her duffel bag on the floor.
When I pulled up to the hospital, I just sat there. Sometimes it still amazes me that despite me becoming pregnant at such a young age, I still accomplished my goal. My parents always telling me how proud they are of me. I just wish I could hear the same from my brother. God knows how much I miss him. There’s not a day that goes by where I’m thinking about him and what he’d be saying right now. My phone began to rang, and the caller ID read ‘Ma’.
I laughed to myself before I answered. “I done thought you up.”
“Well glad to know you’re thinking about me.”
“Always.”
“Are you at work?” she asked.
“Actually I am, but I’m a few hours early. For what reason? I don’t know. I just had a feeling that I needed to be here earlier than I should,” I explained.
“Really? Well you know how you get when you get those feelings,” she reminded me.
“Yea… I just hope it’s nothing bad.”
“I’m sure it’s not. But listen, your father and I are coming up to visit in a few weeks. You know he’s retired now, so he wants to start traveling and visiting yall more often.”
I smiled as I gathered my things and got out the car. “We’d really love that. Abby hasn’t seen her grandparents in a minute and I know Tracey would love for yall to see him play.”
My mom began laughing on the other end. “That’s all that man been talking about. How he couldn’t wait to see Tracey play from the floor seats.”
“Yea that sounds like Daddy alright. Well, I’m heading inside right now. I’ll let Tracey know that yall are coming and we’ll get everything ready for you,” I replied.
“Okay sweetie. I love you and try not to stress over work today.”
“I won’t and I love you too.”
Once inside the hospital, I waved to the employees that looked my way. Some looked very enthusiastic; I’m guessing they were running off coffee. The others appeared hella exhausted and that only meant one thing; they had to work overnight. I shook my head. I only had to work two overnight shifts since I’ve been working here and that’s only because our staff was a little short then. But now we’re fully staffed and it makes it easier for our patients to get the help they need in a timely manner.
