I just wanted one normal year. And I was tired of the dead being not dead, so when I got a call from Annabeth telling me that a character from The Iliad was alive again, I understandably cursed really loud and got into my car reluctantly.
Now I had never actually read the Iliad, But I knew a little about the storyline, and I had never heard of Briseis, but Annabeth being herself knew everything about it, so I decided to let her fill me in as we walked briskly toward the big house.
"Basically she was a girl who "belonged" to Achilles, and this douche named Agamemnon took her and Achilles stopped fighting, which made the Greeks lose, and then his best bro slash life partner Patroclus took his armor and fought the Trojans as him until Apollo kinda sabatoged him and undid his armor, which made Hector kill him and then Achilles killed Hector, fulfilling a prophecy that he would die after hector, Apollo guided the arrow that killed him." She said in one long breath.
"Oookay... but why is she here?" She gave me a look.
"Do you think I know?" I couldn't reply because we walked in the door of the big house. She was sitting on one of the couches, and I could immediately tell she was Briseis.
She looked like she was pulled right out of a carving on the acropolis, with her whole Greek look going on. She was talking rapidly in Greek, and It was so soft I couldn't translate it, but whatever it was Chiron was taking it in calmly, per the usual.
She paused and looked up at me, then went back to talking. I heard the words Perseus and Poseidon from Chiron but couldn't make out much more.
That's when stuff started glowing. I'm not even joking. The light looked to be concentrated at a spot near the steps that lead into the attic, and as it faded away a man was revealed. He had a wily look about him, with a beard and a hooked nose. His eyes were black and beady as he quickly took us all in. Them he saw Briseis and his eyes widened. She looked at him, horrified, and he started to speak."Who are you, that this dead woman is here? Why should she be alive and well, I saw her fall. Why am I intact, after I was slain by my wife. What has happened here?" He barked. Chiron stood up and the man shrank. "I was indeed going to ask that of you, Agamemnon."
So this was Agamemnon, the skink that took Briseis from Achilles. I looked him up and down, and he seemed to do the same, as if he could feel me sizing him up. I became aware of Annabeth besides me, and turned to murmur to her," He looks like a traitor" She nodded in assent."When I was reading the Iliad, I always hated him."
Chiron and Agamemnon stared each other down for a second before Briseis caught his attention. She was slowly inching away from him, as if he would lash out at any given moment. Of course she would be scared of him, Who knows what he had done to her in the past. I took a step in front of her, blocking his view, and he scowled. "Move out of my way, child. The girl is mine."
Chiron out a restraining hand on Agamemnons shoulder, bearing hm down. " You are dead, Agamemnon. I wouldn't be making threats if I were you."
One thing was shockingly clear, the dead were coming back, they remembered their lives, and they were in the modern world. Something should probably be done about this I suppose. Never thought I'd miss a college classroom as much as I do right now.
