Aspen
"Time to get up!" The guard yells outside the thin door before knocking loudly to make sure I'm awake. Jokes on him, I've been up for hours.
I look over at the clock hanging high on the wall, seeing it's seven AM. They always get us up at this time for some reason. If anyone is like me, we barely get any sleep in this place as is so it doesn't make sense to wake us up so earlier. Plus, it's not like we got anything important to do today. We do the same thing every day: breakfast, morning meds, morning evaluation, lunch, group session, dinner, night meds, then bed.
Getting out of bed, I change into jeans and a t-shirt before leaving my room to the cafeteria room. Some patients are already in the room, eating and talking amongst themselves. I stand in the breakfast line and once I get my tray, I go sit at a random table away from everyone else.
Once I finish eating, I put my tray in the pile by the trash can then go to the nurse to tell her I'm finished.
"Doctor Jones wants to see you." She told me before I could say a word. I follow her down the hall until we are at the door that has a golden plaque of Doctor Jones's name. After a second the door opens, and I make my way inside and sit down in the cold brown chair.
As soon as the door is closed, Doctor Jones starts talking, "How are you doing today, Aspen?"
"I'm fine." I said, "What going on?"
The doctor nods, "Good. I have some great news for you. Over the course of your time here, you have made an immense progress. I've discussed with your therapist Dr. Johnson and we think it's time for you to go home."
I was silently jumping for joy. I was more than ready to leave this pit of torture. Back to the outside world, where I could breathe freely.
"Thank you, Doctor Jones," I said quietly, trying to hide my happiness.
He laughed, "I know you're excited, you don't have to hide. Now, you're scheduled to leave after lunch time so you have time to pack your stuff and say goodbye to anyone." I wanted to roll my eyes, I don't have much stuff or any friends here. However, not to be rude, I said 'okay' and left the office.

As lunchtime approached, I was already ready to leave. I waited in the lunchroom for a guard to come get me.
Looking around the room, I realized how much I will miss this place. Even though I wanted to leave as soon as I was shoved in here, I really got used to the routine and the people here. Although I never connected with anyone, hearing their stories they shared made them seem so much more normal.
Soon, a guard announced that my parents were here to pick me up. With a deep breath, I got up and looked around the room one more time before I left. As soon as I stepped into the natural light of the sun, I shielded my eyes. I was able to go outside during my time here but I haven't been outside all day.
My parents were inside the car, waiting for me to get in as well. Wow, no shocker there. Of course, they wouldn't have the heart to face me, not even after pushing me in a psych ward a year ago. Silently, I get into the car, not saying a word.
No words were spoken the entire ride, not even when we reach our house. We all get out and go inside the house. My so-called parents leave me and go upstairs to their room.
Home sweet home.
