(Asurah POV)
Being around humans was an odd, yet very intriguing experience. They were a naturally inquisitive species, but I was quite curious about them as well. They were also a great change to this boring place, bringing such diverse personalities. For instance, Olivia was a very intelligent person, electronics being her favorite topic to learn about. Jack was quiet and brash, but his passion for literature made him a very interesting individual. And Joseph...I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but he seemed much different than his comrades. He made an effort to stay by my side, whether it was to ask questions about my hobbies, or if it was just to bask in my presence, which I found odd. I could also often see him losing himself in his thoughts, making me often wonder what the other man was thinking about.
So far, the humans have only been here for a few days. However, I felt like they had been here forever and I couldn't exactly explain why. It was like a small kindle was lit in a world so dull, and lifeless. Maybe I thought this way because I was hardly bothered with. No one wanted to offend a king, so why talk to one in the first place? Sure, I talked to other kings, and queens, emperors and others, but it was entirely for diplomatic reasons. I didn't have fun when I talked to them, and there was no joy in our conversations. I did have one other person to talk to, someone I could enjoy a nice conversation with. Teiken. But he was usually off on his own planet, doing his own things. He was a Prince, so he was more often than not, being schooled by his father on how to be an appropriate and strong leader. That left me with no other friend to talk to. The servants only did as I asked because I was their leader, not because they really wanted to. That, and they got paid quite well for serving me.
However, once these humans showed up, I had other people to talk to. It was honestly exhilarating to have conversations about topics you liked, whether it be about the human's everyday lives, or what I enjoyed doing.
Though, what I did not enjoy doing, was attending pointless balls for status reasoning. Like today. Today I had to attend the Hewon Ball, despite my distaste for such pointless events. I had to have Enae grab the outfit I usually wore at parties, but upon receiving the outfit, we both realized that I had outgrown it. Which meant I had to contact someone last minute, in order to have them quickly make me a new outfit. There was a lot of poking and prodding, but the tailor finally managed to get it done. It was a one piece, the top sleeveless and trailing down, ending in what a human might call, underwear. On top of that was an accessorized translucent skirt like material, which was blue and longer in the back, than the front. It was held onto my hips by a belt made from turquoise. The top was in a turtleneck fashion, with turquoise beads accessorizing it. My hair was pulled back into a loose braid, and my newest crown, made from turquoise and silver, was placed on top of my head. I put on two bracelet cuffs, and waited until my ship arrived in order to leave.
I walked back and forth, swinging my arms and trying to get in my diplomatic mindset. I had to show no emotion. A king who shows too much emotion, was weak, and I couldn't have my rivals finding something else to tease me about. I had to definitely stay away from the punch, not because it was poisoned or laced with alcohol, but because it was literally the worst tasting thing I had ever had in the three centuries of my life. It was like an old man puked in a bucket, only to drop that bucket on manure. It was gross. I couldn't even understand how one could drink such a vile beverage.
I was about ready to leave my room when I heard my door open. I turned, surprised to see Joseph standing there, his nose scrunched up. "Why the heck are you wearing a thong?"
I furrowed my brow, not knowing what a "thong" was. Was he referring to my outfit? "A what?"
Joseph's eyebrows rose on his face, a look of bewilderment crossing his features. "You don't know what a--you know what? Nevermind. I'm definitely not going there." He leaned against the wall by the door, nodding his head in my direction. "So, where are you going?"
I pouted, displeased that he didn't elaborate on the thong thing. Instead of showing him my disappointment, I shrugged, crossing my arms over my chest. "I have this ball I must attend. I would rather not go, but if I want to keep my reputation up, I must. Even if I don't want to. How is your ship coming along? I do hope my handymen are adequately helping you."
Joseph hooked his fingers into his newly obtained pants, made from the fur of a kápros, a being notorious for its thick fur. "It's getting there. Only need a couple modules and a new core, and she should be as good as new."
"She? Your ship is female? How do you know?" I asked, raising a curious eyebrow.
Joseph opened his mouth, closed it, then opened it again as if he were baffled by my questions. "It's just...something we humans say, I guess. It's a weird thing. Mostly used for ships and cars, though. Though, I had a cousin who called his toaster, Jessy. I'm pretty sure he was dropped on his head as a child...Hey, don't look at me like that, I didn't mean literally. It's just another weird thing us humans say."
Humans are such strange creatures, I thought, nodding absentmindedly as I made sure my beads were in place. "Well, I should probably go see what the problem is with my ship. I called them five minutes ago to have them bring it here, and it hasn't arrived yet."
"Hey...do you want me to go with you? To the ball, I mean?"
I paused, glancing at Joseph curiously. A human? At the Hewon Ball? What would people think? What would they say? Would they mock me for bringing such a weak creature? Would they laugh at me? Would they try to hurt him? The possibilities were literally endless with the creatures that attend such events. For goodness sake, there was a creature that attended known as the Vévaia, who literally fed off of blood. The humans, if my research was correct, had a similar creature known as a vampire. Although, I believe the vampire was a work of fiction. The Vévaia were very real, and very dangerous.
And to bring a weak, defenseless human there? It would be like an open buffet to him.
Then again...what would it be like to bring a friend there? Or, well, acquaintance whose gut I didn't immediately hate. Would I actually get to have a decent conversation with him there? What would we even talk about? The other creatures? The horrible decorations? The music that really wasn't music, despite what the Queen said?
Would we talk about the food? So many things were running through my head, a mile a minute, making me slightly dizzy. Maybe for once this could be an enjoyable party.
I glanced up at Joseph, who was staring at me expectantly, eyebrows raised. When he saw me staring, he rolled his eyes and crossed his arms, leaning away from the wall. "Look, I know what you're thinking. I'm not as weak as you believe, you know. I was at the top of my class with swordsmanship, gunmanship, and even hand to hand combat. I've even beaten men bigger than me who had tried cheating in the matches against me, and was able to maintain my metal as strongest cadet. Hell, I can say that I'm your bodyguard, if you want. I mean, kings have bodyguards, don't they? Or...is that another weird custom of yours I don't know about?"
"Well, we do have bodyguards, I just never needed one before,"
"Good," the other man interrupted, "so just say I'm your bodyguard. Plus, I'm actually really curious to see what aliens do at balls. So...can I go?"
I stared at him long and hard, already regretting my decision as soon as it came out of my mouth. I was sure that I was going to regret letting him come with me later on, but for now, I would indulge this human. And definitely not because I didn't want to suffer alone. So, with that thought in mind, I gave him his answer. "Alright, then. Let's go."
A/N: Fun fact about myself, I don't like parties. Mostly because I have severe social anxiety. Plus, a lot of people my age nowadays aren't really the...brightest lol. Also, the pic above is a drawing of Asurah's outfit for the ball/party thing. The anatomy isn't great, but oh well lol
Anywho, I hope you all enjoy the chapter! Also, look how pwetty Asurah looksssss lol
