“You declined!” Maggie yelled. I just came back from the head mistress’ office and Maggie was in the common room waiting for me. I told her about the Head Girl issue and she looked like she was about to kill when I said no to Professor McGronagall. Good thing everyone in the house decided to call it a night.
“I want to live a normal life for once.” I told her as I rubbed my aching temples.
“You’ve wanted this ever since we were 12. Your father would love to see you wearing that badge.” Maggie’s tone softened upon the mention of my father.
I know he wanted this. I know I also wanted this but it was too much for me to handle. Wearing that badge would just bring me back to the memory of him dying in front of me. I know I should fulfill his wish but I just couldn’t I couldn’t bear the memory of him wanting me to become head girl and then dying in front of me. It hurts remembering him.
“I know Maggie.” I sighed. I know she’s going to make me accept it. “Just leave it alone.” She drops her hands and sits back on the couch defeated, for now, at least.
“I’m heading up.” I tell her as I push myself off the leather couch.
“Good Night Alex.”
I head up to the dorm I share with Maggie. The dorm is the same as always, 4 post beds, 4 trunks near the foot boards, four mahogany tables and two oak bookshelves between two beds. I grew to love this dorm room it was like a second home for me, a sanctuary or some sorts. For some reason I couldn’t find my dorm mates anywhere. I didn’t spot them at the common room, maybe they were still in the halls.
I sat on my bed which was luckily near the window. As always Charlie, my brown owl was sitting there watching the sky with his big round eyes. I reached out and petted his black spotted bead. His head turned to me and he hooted and affectionately nibbled my finger. I smiled at Charlie since he always feels what I feel and he tries to cheer me up. But my brows knitted together when I saw something beneath Charlie’s feet.
“Charlie come here.” I lifted my arm and Charlie flew to my arm. I picked up the parchment and examined it.
Alexandria Maria Paige
My name was perfectly written on the white envelope. My eyes widen when I realized my second name was written on it, the only person who uses my second name was my dad. My arms were starting to shake as I tried to open the envelope. The Paige family crest was on the blue molten wax and I try to open it.
Dearest Mally,
My hand instantly flew to my mouth as I try to contain my sobs. Mally. My dad used to call me Mally. Since I never really wanted the name Marie he decided to call me Mally. This is his handwriting and I knew it. The date written on the top right corner of the paper caught my eye. July 31st 1996. This was the day before I entered 6th year.
Dearest Mally,
If you are reading this letter my dear, meaning I have gone and the war has ended and the light has won. If the light hasn’t won then this letter would not have reached you.
