"I may or may not have bought us a [pet]..."

The past week had been a mixture of emotions for me. Whilst on a girls trip to the Caribbean, I got a very sad call from my mum saying that my childhood dog had passed away. Although I was devastated, my girls tried their best to cheer me up and turn my week around.
Another person who was there for me was my best friend and boyfriend, Charles. As soon as he had found out, he was on the phone to me straight away despite the fact that it was the early hours of the morning for him. He sat through my ugly crying on FaceTime and offered nothing but reassurance.
"Here, now, don't cry." He had said. "It will get easier, I promise. I'll buy you a present for when you get back." At the time, I thought nothing of it. The most I was expecting was a box of chocolates or maybe even a stuffed toy. I even told him not to get me anything and that his hugs would be sufficient but he persisted.
I called Charles again on the morning of the day I was coming back when something peculiar happened on his line. Whilst he was chatting away about his day of training, I heard a sound of something smashing to the floor. Charles didn't mention that he had anyone over.
"What was that?" I asked.
"Nothing, babe. I just accidentally knocked a glass off the table." He quickly replied. I could tell in his voice that he was hiding something but wasn't in the mood to press further. I mean, I probably could've but my friend was calling out that the airport taxi had arrived.
"I'll call you when I land." I said to Charles.
"I'll be right there to pick you up. Travel safely."
"I will. I love you."
"I love you, too."

The flight was long - there was no denying it. What made it even worse was the fact that the person in the neighbouring seat was watching Marley & Me. I had to wipe a few tears away in memory of my old dog. I would give anything to hug him one last time. I tried to keep my attention on one of my friends who was still drinking alcohol despite the fact that she had yet to go twelve hours without a drink this entire holiday. She did manage to convince me to have one beer, but I firmly put my foot down after that as I was quite the emotional drunk.
Charles was true to his word and met me at the airport. Upon seeing him, I almost dropped my bags as I ran into his arms. "I missed you so much." I mumbled into his shoulder, squeezing him so tightly I'm sure I was suffocating him.
"I missed you, too." He pulled back slightly so that he could connect our lips in a sweet kiss. It may have only been short since we were in a public space, but it still gave me that fluttery feeling in my heart. "Your gift is at home. I'm sorry you're going to have to wait a bit longer for it."
"Charles..." I met his gaze. "You didn't have to get me anything. Just having you for comfort is enough."
"I think you'll like the gift, Y/N." He smiled. "Just wait."
I did as he said and waited patiently throughout the car journey home. Although I was curious as to what the gift was, I was a bit too jet lagged to be bothered to pester him. My bed was one of the most enticing things to me at the moment.
As we walked up to our house, I noticed Charles became a little more nervous. I grabbed his hand in mine to stop it from drumming against his leg, to which he smiled in gratitude. He fumbled with the keys in the lock before he pushed the door hesitantly open. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion - Why was he acting to weird?
Any question I had was answered when the familiar sound of claws slipping on hardwood floor echoed in the hallway. Not long after, a small ball of fluff came charging around the corner. Luckily I was quick to get inside and close the door behind me before it could escape. I was still in shock when I turned to Charles, an eyebrow raised.
With a sheepish grin, he crouched down and picked up the black puppy. "I may or may not have bought us a dog..."
The dog was excitedly wriggling in Charles's arms as it tried to get closer to me. I put out a hand and gently petted the top of its small adorable head. I wanted to melt right there on the spot.
"Her name is Tilly. She's a cockapoo like your old dog Sammy was." Charles explained as he watched my reaction carefully. I was at a loss for words and the fact that I was so sleep deprived meant that I was also pretty emotional.
"Oh, Charles." My eyes welled up with tears as I looked at the mini version of my old childhood dog. I brought my hands to my mouth to suppress a sob.
Charles's eyes widened. "Oh my gosh, I'm sorry! I thought you would want a dog because you were talking about it for ages and I-"
"It's not that." I said, wiping away the free falling tears. "I'm really happy. I love you so much." I took a step towards him and wrapped my arms around his neck. I was aware of the bouncing puppy in between us as we hugged and left enough space for her.
"I thought we could be a little family until you're ready to have kids." Charles smiled down at me. From the looks of it, his eyes were getting a little watery, too.
"I couldn't have asked for anyone better to start a family with." I stood on my tiptoes and pressed my lips against his. "I love you."
"I love you, too." He said back. Tilly also decided she wanted in on the 'I love you's and let out a small bark causing Charles and I to laugh.
