At first, I thought the late nights were nothing. Nyck's job required him to work long hours and I didn't want to become the paranoid girlfriend. He told me that I shouldn't worry, so I didn't. However, when he started to not come home until the early hours of the morning, wreaking of cigarette smoke and alcohol, I decided to confront him about it.

The front door rattled open at 3:27 early Monday morning. I had stayed up specifically to confront Nyck. His footsteps echoed through the hall, stopping abruptly before they got the living room where I was sat.

"Y/N?" I heard him call tentatively. His head soon followed, poking around the wall to meet my unimpressed look. "What're you doing up this late?"

"I was just waiting for you." I replied.

"There's no need, schatje." He took a few steps towards the sofa where I was sat. I got a whiff of the alcohol, however, instead of cigarettes, a light smell of vanilla laced with cinnamon lingered. I wasn't usually one to wear that scent and I also hadn't even properly been near Nyck since lunch.

"So," I began, trying not the think of how the perfume ended up on him, "where did you go? I doubt they'd serve you alcohol at the garage."

"I was just celebrating with a couple of friends." Nyck easily brushed off. "We've had a pretty decent weekend."

"You could always celebrate with me, you know? Don't you think it'd be nice to have a quiet night in?" I played with my fingers in my lap - confrontation had never been one of my strong points and I was far from confident.

"I was going to invite you but I didn't think you'd want to come. You've never shown an interest in going out before." Some of his words were slurred so I can tell he was drunk.

"This is the third night this past week that you went out drinking." I sighed. "And all the other nights you were working late."

"I wasn't aware that I had a curfew." Nyck's tone had changed drastically. He seemed to turn the blame on me.

"You don't have a curfew, but you do have a girlfriend. Funnily enough, I actually want to spend time with my boyfriend in between races because I love him." I couldn't help but roll my eyes. "But if you'd rather spend his time with some other girl, that's fine."

Nyck looked quite taken back by my final comment. His eyes widened and his mouth opened and closed like a fish. Although I had had my suspicions, I didn't want them to be true. Nyck's reaction, however, gave me all the confirmation I needed.

"What did she have that I didn't?" My voice cracked and I felt myself on the verge of tears. "Because I sure as hell hope it was worth it."

"Y/N, schatje, please just listen. Let me explain."

"Explain that instead of spending time with your girlfriend you decide to throw over two years of relationship away on some random fucks?"

"Y/N, I swear it was only the one time." Nyck appeared to sober up extremely quickly as he dropped down on his knees in front of me. His hand reached out for mine but I swatted it away. I didn't want to be anywhere near him at the moment. "It'll never happen again." There were tears leaking out of the corner of his eyes, but nowhere near the rate that that were streaming out of mine.

"If you do it once, you'll do it again." I dropped my eyes to my lap and let out a choked sob. "I don't want to keep hurting. I don't want to keep wasting my time on someone who doesn't even love me."

"Don't say that." Worry now laced his words. "You're the only woman I've loved. Things have just been stressful at the moment and I didn't want to take it out on you."

"So you take it out on some rando instead?" I scoffed. "Nyck, I think it'll be best if you sleep downstairs tonight."

"Schatje, please." I abruptly stood up and moved away from his hand that tried to grab me. "You don't understand how sorry I am."

"We can discuss it more in the morning." I closed my eyes and rubbed my temple, not wanting to look at Nyck in case I fell straight back into his arms. "But don't be surprised if you never see me again after that."
