eleven hopper sat in her room, blankets cozily wrapped around her as another tear steamed down her flushed face.

the mind flayer — it had won. it had murdered will.

el had endless upon endless thoughts racing in her head. she was his step-sister. she thought that she could've stopped it. that she could've been stronger and unleashed a greater force upon the monster.

her father, jim hopper, heard her sobs through his closed bedroom door. her entire family attempted to convince her that it wasn't her fault. of course, she didn't feel that way. she felt god-awful.

a knock sounded at her door, causing her to turn her head over. she didn't bother to say anything.

she didn't want to talk to her dad for the millionth time, all she wanted to do was curl up in a ball and cry for the rest of her life.

the door opened to reveal mike wheeler, the only person she was willing to see.

"mike." she breathed out, sprinting out of bed and collapsing into his arms. the forceful hug caused him to stumble backwards, but nevertheless, he still wrapped his arms around her small waist.

mike released from the comforting embrace to cup both of his warm hands around her face and wipe away her tears with his thumbs.

"do you want to sit down? on your bed?" mike asked softly, gazing into her tear-filled eyes.

she reluctantly nodded, and took his hand to lead him to her bed.

"i-i feel stupid. t-this is all my f-fault." she stammered, holding back sobs.

"none of this is your fault, el. that's a promise." he told her, grabbing both of her trembling hands.

"i-i want to s-stop being sad. b-but i can't." she croaked, wrapping her arms around mike's neck once again.

he sighed, rubbing his thumb lightly in circles on her back. he could never imagine what she was going through. it drove him absolutely insane that she dealt with the most horrid childhood and now she had to go through this, too.

he pulled away from the long embrace, smiling softly at his girlfriend.

god, even when she was crying and shaking she looked beautiful.

"i'm being stupid. h-he probably didn't even care about m-me anyways." el said under her breath, wiping away tears with the sleeves of the sweater she had stolen from mike.

"t-that's not true! he thought you were... awesome." mike grinned goofily.

"he thought i was awesome? my brother?" el shook her head in disbelief. she always thought will found her to be a pest whilst he was doing his homework or trying to hang out with his friends.

the truth was, will never spoke about el, or even his family, for that matter.

"definitely!" he lied.
