— HEY GUYS! I HOPE YOU ARE STAYING SAFE DURING THIS INSANE WEATHER, SENDING MY LOVE FROM WISCONSIN!

el had endured yet another gruesome nightmare.

although it had been ten months since she reunited with mike, she would still occasionally wake up with tears streaming down her face and wanting nothing more than to be in a certain freckle-faced boy's comforting embrace.

the humid night on the 27th of august was one of those dreadful nights.

it was one of the last days of summer vacation, which was extremely unfortunate for el. this meant that instead of biking around with her friends for hours on end, she would now only be able to see the party after school hours and on weekends.

el took a deep breath as she glanced over next to her, the usual empty spot in her bed was now occupied by none other than michael wheeler.

earlier that night, she had called him after she had just woken up from a brutal nightmare. she didn't want to wake him up, but she didn't know what else to do. hopper was working the night shift, and it wasn't like she had anywhere else to turn.

he responded instantly, his heart racing as he bit at his nails. he hated hearing el in pain, it absolutely ruined him. thankfully, mike biked over to the miniature cabin as quickly as possible.

mike carefully opened the window to el's bedroom, not wanting to wake hopper. unbeknownst to him, hopper wasn't even home.

his heart broke as he saw his girl's face buried in blankets, muffled sobs sounding throughout the small bedroom.

mike removed his shoes and sat down next to her, his eyebrows furrowed.

"m-mike." she immediately whispered in a broken voice, wrapping her arms around him and burying her face in his neck.

he ran his hand through her shoulder-length hair as her tears soaked his t-shirt.

"hey, what's wrong?" he asked softly, pulling away from her and tucking a loose strand of her hair behind her ear.

she opened her mouth to say something, but no words came out. instead, she went back to bawling in his arms.

"do you want to talk about it?" he mumbled into her frizzy hair.

she lifted her head from his now drenched t-shirt, shaking her head no. her arms were still dangling around his neck.

"c-can you just stay here, please?" she questioned in a fragile voice.

he looked at her sympathetically, leaning forward and placing a gentle kiss on her forehead.

"of course. nothing's going to hurt you, alright? i-i won't let anyone or anything hurt you." he comforted her, grabbing her trembling hands.

"p-promise?" she stuttered, averting her gaze away from him. although she had cried in front of him on numerous occasions, she was still embarrassed.

"promise." he replied, cupping her face and wiping away the remaining tears.
