Jackson hacked through more thick bushes, listening to his fiancee complain about the conditions.
"it was your choice to come, Nina, and I would have preferred it if you didnt" his thirteen year old sister mumbled the last part and Jackson snorted.
"alright, we'll have another rest then." he called to the two girls. Nina sighed with relief but Kauna dropped her mouth open
"what??! If we have a rest every five minutes we'll never find it!" she groaned and Nina sighed
"sweetie, there's really nothing to see. We're just here to humour you, okay? We should turn around and go back." Nina said, smiling at the younger girl. Kauna shook her head in disgust
"yes, there is. I remember!" she shot back and Jackson stood between the two.
"alright, calm down. We're going to go after this thing Nina, she's been wanting to for years. And Kauna?" Jackson watched Nina walk off a bit and kneeled next to his sister.
"lay off on her, okay? She has to come, we're going to be married in a few months and she'll be your sister in law."
Kauna rolled her eyes.
"lucky me." she exclaimed, walking away from her brother. Sometimes Kauna has dreams, where her brother wasn't with Nina, but someone much nicer, brown hair, brown eyes, nothing out of the ordinary, but she wasn't horrible to Kauna, she was nice, and treated Kauna like a little sister, she was able to talk to her and tell her gossip, and things about school, and she would believe Kauna when she said magic was real. She remembered seeing it. Although Kauna was about eight at the time, and the picture was fuzzy in her head, she definitely remembered something. Hiding behind Jackson, seeing purple light, and a pretty pattern creep across the floor of ice and green lush leaves, little purple flowers. But no one else remembered it, not even Jackson. Every one said it was a dream. But no, She was stuck with this high maintenance girl that her brother was convinced he was in love with. Kauna sighed.
"okay break over, let's go, we might find it before it gets dark, then Nina you can go back, and me and Jackson will keep going and find out where it comes from." she said, clapping her hands together and standing up, looking around to find her way.
Nina looked pointedly at her brother and he sighed.
"hey Kauna, we're gonna stop here." he said to her quietly and Kauna looked back at Nina who was listening intently.
"but we just stopped here?" she replied and Jackson shook his head.
"no, I mean we're going to camp here tonight, and head back tomorrow. I'm sorry, but we're missing too much to keep doing this, I have work, Nina has too help with the steamstressing, you'll understand when your older." he said to her and Kauna shook her in disbelief
"we can't stop, what if we find it!"
Kauna cried and Jackson shook his head.
"Kauna, we're going back tomorrow, that's final." Jackson told her and Kauna scowled.
"what is wrong with you? You're just doing everything Nina wants you to do, you never even consider me! I'm not a baby anymore okay, it wasn't a dream." she huffed and turned away from her brother. If only the girl from her fantasies of a better sister-in-law came true, then he wouldn't be like this. Not even close. Kauna and Jackson had drifted apart ever since the day she saw what she did. And Kauna couldn't figure out why. She sighed and walked over to a log to sit down as Jackson put up a tent for him and Nina. She felt a tear drop down her face as her dreams were crushed. No proof, she couldn't even keep searching for magic.
"I'll help you set up your tent" her big brother said quietly. Kauna wiped her nose and looked away.
"okay." she mumbled and stood up. Hours later, she was lying on a thin mattress, staring at the canvas roof waiting for sleep. Finally, after the other voices had died down to nothing and the lights went out, she saw it again.
Outside the thick canvas, was a faint purple glow.
Kaunas heart leapt, and she struggled to hurry out of her blankets. She put on her boots and cloak and went outside.
The light was from one of the flowers, One of the few she had seen that the three of them had been following in the first place. They were the same as she saw before, and now she was positive. A smile found its way onto her face, and she looked behind her to see darkness and silence from the other tent. with a deep breath, Kauna put the first in her pocket and went towards the flower, in total darkness. There was another a few metres away, and after that. So Kauna followed, getting further and further away from the camp, and away from her brother and Nina.
