After I am out of sight I run to the elevator. I can't hold myself together anymore. I break down crying. I don't stop after the elevator doors open. I run. I need to get as far away as I can, as fast as I can. I get outside and I feel as if I can breathe again. My heart is pounding in my chest. I'm sure that I am a sight to see with my red cheeks and swollen eyes.
"Ana?" Lexi walks over to me.
I didn't even see her coming back from lunch. I have difficulty catching my breath because of the sobs. My body is shaking with violent spasms. Lexi sets her hand on my shoulder as I stare at the ground. I turned to her and cry my eyes out.
"Honey what's wrong?" She asks.
her gentle voice helps mend my broken heart after my brutal exchange with Mark.
"Ma... Ma... Mark, he, he. Oh Lexi, it's so horrible." I stammer.
I begin crying again. She tries her best to comfort me.
"Come on honey let's walk a bit. Calm down and breathe."
She puts an arm around me taking me with her to walk down the street a little bit. The crowds of people push me back into my daily life, into what is normal. For a moment I forget what just happened. We find a little bench a few blocks away and sit. I wipe my tears. I sniffle, and my breathing is heavy.
"What's going on honey?" She asks me.
A shadow walks to us and stops. I can't really see through my tears, but I sense that it's Colten. I don't dare look at him. I feel horrible and embarrassed.
"Mark and I had a fight because of his motorcycle. Things turned bad really fast and, he said we needed a break, he's left me. He broke up with me." I say.
All my efforts to hold back my tears shatter and here I am again crying like a baby. Lexi gently rubs my back trying to calm me down.
Colton lingers a few more minutes. He kneels in front of me giving me a tight hug.
"It's going to be okay Ana, he cares about you far too much to end your relationship because of a single fight. Let me talk to him before you lose hope. The two of you belong together." Colten whispers to me, pressing his lips to my forehead.
"Do you want to talk about it honey?" Lexi asks.
"He told me of a girl he dated before me, her name was Lila. They had a serious motorcycle accident. He got out of it alive, but she didn't survive. He thinks that he's responsible for her death. I kept telling him that it was just an accident, that I wanted to help him, but like always he pushed me away."
"I'll take care of her." Lexi says to Colten. "You should go check on Mark."
Her tone is gentle but still firm. Lexi hugs me. Colten rests his hand on my back for a moment before he disappears. I begin wondering what it looks like to my friends on the outside, all of the stories. On the inside it seems like a real mess. so, I can only imagine what they think.
"It's a good thing that he talked to you about it." Lexi said.
"How was it a good thing, he's just dumped me."
"Did he say that he wanted to leave you?"
"He said he needed time. I just wanted him to talk to me and tell me what happened." I said.
"Honey, he's a guy. It's an important step from him. It had to come out sooner or later. Unfortunately, it doesn't always come out at the right time or in the right way. Men communicate different than we do. Especially when they decide to wall themselves off. Come on sweetie, it's going to be okay. He just needs time to himself to deal with the past before he can move on with you."
