The taxi pulls up in front of Matt's mansion. I get an uneasy feeling walking through the gates up the path. The last time I was here Matt told me he loved me. I walked through the gates ready to settle the score as I did the last time quickly making my way to the house. Every time everything is going well with his brother and I, he shows up and fucks it up. I am fuming as I approach the house walking up the circle driveway. Outside its quiet. Too quiet. There is a black van pulled up between Matt's car and the house. Behind the van a yellow race car I had seen all those months ago when I was wrapped in Matt's arms. Fear creeps into my mind. I was right. Something bad is happening. I pull out my phone calling Mark, praying that he answers. There is no answer. I see movement inside the house and duck behind Matt's car. I hear aggressive yelling followed by the sound of breaking glass. There is a crash and moments later the front doors swing open smashing against the wall of the house. I can make out two male figures come out of the house. I have trouble readjusting my eyes to the light pouring out of the house. I hear Matt's voice.
"I told you I want nothing to do with it anymore. You have no right to show up at my house uninvited." Matt says loudly. His voice is firm and means business.
"You may tell my father that you won't say shit about our business, but I don't trust you. Once a brother always a brother, blood in, blood out!" The man yelling at Matt is much shorter than he is, but the man's arms are twice the size.
"You have my word, I won't say anything. Leave my brother out of this!" Matt says.
I lean a little farther out. Mark stands outside of the house being held by two men. His eye is swollen shut. Blood runs from his nose and mouth dripping on the concrete. My heart crushes and my breathing accelerates. Seeing him like this and being able to do nothing, I feel helpless. I think about calling my brother for help but quickly decided it's a bad idea. The small man turns punching Mark in the stomach. Three more men walk out of the house. There is no way for Mark to fight back. Even if he could get a few good punches in, there is no way for him to take them all on. They are out numbered.
Another man punches Mark in the stomach. Mark expels air taking the blow. I silently scream inside, I want to do something but there's nothing I can do! Matt steps in front of his brother stopping the man from continuing.
"Stop, he's not a part of this." Matt demands.
"Get out of the way." The second man says.
"Maybe your brother would like to go for a ride with us." The first says pushing Matt.
Matt steps back toward the house. His eyes lock with mine. I see the fear in his hazel eyes. He clenches his jaw and his expression changes. He's probably wondering what I'm doing here. I'm beginning to wonder the same thing.
"What are you looking at?" The man barks.
He turns to look out. I duck down petrified, closing my eyes tightly. I hope he didn't see me.
"Nothing, I was just thinking. You have a striking resemblance to an orangutan I saw at the zoo as a child. I feel sorry for your mother." I peak around the corner of the car. The guy has stopped, not sure of how to respond but no doubt fuming mad inside. Matt must be crazy to talk to somebody like this guy like that. I understand he is trying to divert attention away from me, but he is putting himself and his brother at risk. I must admit he has done a lot to protect me now and in the past.
"I think your brother would like to take a ride with us!" The guy repeats and laughs mockingly.
My stomach turns as the man turns back to Mark punching him in the stomach once more. Mark's face distorts in pain. The man seems to ignore Matt as he spits something quickly in Spanish to the men holding mine. The men drag Mark to the van throwing him in the back. He seems to have no strength to defend himself. The men pile in the car and the van quickly leaving in a cloud of smoke. I come out of my hiding spot in a panic. Those people just took my boyfriend and his brother let them.
