I walk with Matt out to his car. Getting in his car was difficult before. Now that I am pregnant it's next to impossible, even with Matt's help. He gets in the car and the engine roars. I look up at the window to my apartment. Mark is staring down at us. I get the feeling he really would rather I stayed. Matt drives for about an hour before pulling over into the drive way of a large house in a suburban neighborhood in Jericho.
"Come on." Matt says helping me out of the car.
We go inside. I look around a little on the main level. It's fully furnished. In all honesty it's beautiful. It's the kind of house I always pictured owning for my family.
"What do you think." He asks.
"It's cute. Where are we?" I ask.
"I bought it." He said shoving his hands in his pockets.
"Doesn't seem like your style."
"It's not, I bought it for you."
"You bought me a house?" I asked not believing him. "What's the catch?"
"Yes, and there is no catch, your flat isn't big enough for you and four kids."
"Right." I continue to walk around the house as we talk.
"Ana you know as well as I that there is a possibility that those babies are mine. Regardless of if they are or aren't, you are part of my family now. I want my family to have the best of everything."
"When did you do this?" I walk up the stairs and he follows as I continue to look around.
"While you were in the hospital. After I found out you were pregnant. I was listing to the scary guy with the dark hair talk to your brother about putting you in a proper home."
"Vincenzo Benedetti."
"Yes, that guy. Don't try to tell me to back out of it or you can't accept it, it's too late for that. What's done is done. My name is nowhere on the title. It's solely yours. Your house. Your rules. The furniture isn't all paid for yet. Anything you don't love I can replace. This is why I came to your apartment today. I wanted to show you."
I look back at him. He's leaning against the door jamb of one of the baby's rooms, his hands in his pockets. His face says he is ready for me to yell at him. I walk toward him.
"Matt, your brother can never know what happened between us. Not while we are together, not ever."
"I understand." He said. "I just wanted you to see, I really do care about you and there isn't a bone in my body that tells me these babies aren't mine."
"With that being said." I say in a firm voice. He clenches his jaw ready for me to yell. What I do is just the opposite. "Thank you."
I step forward giving him a hug. He stands there shocked for a few seconds.
"That's it? No yelling? No disapproval?" He says obviously confused.
"Yes, that's it, thank you. I could never afford a house like this even if I worked my entire life to get it. I would have to take family money that my brother doesn't let me touch. So thank you, I really appreciate the gesture."
"This isn't it Ana, I have one more thing the show you."
I follow him down the stairs to the main floor. He walks through the kitchen into a small mud room attached to the garage. He opens the door showing me outside. I go into the garage and stop instantly. There is a brand new Toyota Sequoia.
"I figured you need a way to get yourself and the kids around safely."
"This is too much Matt." I turn around, hugging him again, but this time I begin to cry.
