The Demon League

Chapter 7

We sat in my car, watching the chaos ensue around us. Kids were still trying to escape the school parking lot, and were fleeing like a flock of confused birds. There were a total of three accidents that day.

"I say we wait it out. I don't think many kids are going to be willing to sit here so... I think we have a better chance this way." I said

"Yeah, that sounds like a good plan." Adrienne said

There was a long pause between us.

"You good?" I asked her. Normally Adrienne was extremely talkative, especially after something crazy and exciting happens. But not now. She was lost in thought.

"Yeah, are you?" She asked

"I'm fine, but you're really quiet. Normally you never shut up." I said with a gentle laugh

"Yeah..." She said, returning to wherever she was in her mind. "Do you think... you compromised yourself today?"

I thought about it for a moment. I was already a popular kid, most people had their eyes on me for various reasons. Either because I was popular, I was their friend, or I was someone of interest for other reasons. Now, everyone in that gym period saw that I had powers and saw that I was able defeat three guys with guns and training in martial arts. But here's the other side, what were they going to do about it? Think I'm the coolest thing in the world or think I'm a total freak. What else was I going to do? Thankfully my powers allowed me to change the memories of weak or willing victims, either implanting memories, writing over them or completely erasing them. That would take a ton of time though because of all the kids I saw. And what about the people in the demon world? I was already the creation of a broken cardinal rule, and now I had broken a few of them myself, on top of now trying to date a human. What would my dad say?

I tried reaching out to him, but couldn't reach him. Where was he?

"Are you going back tonight?" She asked

"No, I wasn't planning on it." I said, finally starting the car

"How come? Won't you just wake up back in your bed?" She asked

"I'm not sure. I've never pulled myself out of my body like that before." I admitted

We gave up trying to talk and had a long, silent car ride home.

When we got home, we kicked off our shoes inside the foyer and tossed our bags down onto the floor. My mom wasn't home yet. She worked really long shifts as a nurse, and always came home really tired. She wouldn't be back until around 5. I wasn't really sure why my mom was a nurse. She always came home really really tired from being overworked. She always told me that she wanted to be a nurse so she could help people, but sometimes I think she does it and says that in order to spite my dad, considering he's a demon and all.

"Hungry?" I asked Adrienne

"Bro, I'm always hungry. Plus I know you've got the good shit." She said

And that was true. I was the one who handled all the food and I made sure we had plenty of snacks in case we ever got hungry. We headed over to the walk in pantry in order to freaking raid it. I decided I was going to have some popcorn and Adrienne grabbed the funyuns.

"I think you need to go back." Adrienne said "You can't avoid your other home, you know?"

"I guess, I just don't want to find out what kind of trouble I'm going to be in." I said

"You think you'll be in trouble?" She asked

"Yeah! Duh!" I said "How could I not be? Not only did I read his mind, but I revealed myself as a demon to humans! That's a huge no no."
