I'm a Vegetarian :: Five

    Sitting down at the dinner table with Hayden was slightly awkward to say the least. He picked at his chicken I had spent about two hours slaving over, and pushed aside his ramen noodles that a pre-made package had provided for dinner.

    "Something wrong with your dinner?" I asked, cutting a piece of my chicken off and piercing it with my fork.

    "Just, thinking." He stated, not bothering to look up from his untouched plate.

    "About what?" I prompted after swallowing the piece of chicken I shoved into my mouth. He looked up momentarily at me before returning his attention to that damned piece of chicken. Tell me what's wrong! I wanted to scream, but instead of pursed my lips.

     "About how Russell hasn't had a work out in, I don't know, around two weeks."

     I put my hand to my mouth to suppress the chicken from coming back up. I swallowed carefully, listening to Hayden burst out into laughter at my reaction, banging his fist on the table as he repeatedly told me that I should've seen my face.

    Yeah, well in about five minutes you won't be able to ever recognize your face once I'm done punching it about twelve times.

    "Shut up," I said, "It wasn't that funny."

     He cleared his throat, sobering up. A faint smile was still planted on his delicious pink lips. He looked at me, "You're right. It was hilarious."

     After that comment, we stayed silent until the end of dinner. I was itching to ask Hayden about the date I had told Lee about, but I didn't know if it was an appropriate time to discuss me and my screw-up. Hayden had stopped playing with his dinner and opted to look over at me and sip his coca-cola. I tried to look anywhere but Hayden during our silent dinner, but when my anxiety got the best of me and my foot was bouncing loud enough you could hear it, I finally decided to spill the beans

     "I need a favor," I blurted, remembering my earlier statement I had said to Lee yesterday about Hayden and I going on a date.

    "And what would be that favor, Tantrum?" He mused, pushing his half eaten plate away from him and smirking across the table from me.

    "Lee and I broke up," I paused to see Hayden's reaction, but I didn't get anything out of him so I continued, "And I kind of, sort of, told him that we were um-" I stuttered through the confession, my face warming in embarrassment.

    "Spit it out, Tantrum."

     "-Dating." I let out a quick breath before getting up from the table and taking both of our plates with me. Silently, I scrapped the wasted food into the garbage can beside the counter before moving over to the sink and beginning to wash the dishes.

     "You told him, what?"

     I turned on the faucet, and putting some dish soap into the water. "That we were going on a date. It's not a big deal really. He just thinks I made you up because I'm hurt," I paused, "Which I'm not."

    Hayden groaned, "Why'd you have to volunteer me for this?"

    I stopped the faucet from running with more water by turning it off and turning around to face Hayden, who was now standing up from his seat and was inched closer to me ever so slightly. I could feel my heart getting heavy with the sadness that I bore from the earlier breakup with Lee. I just needed normal. He was my normal.
