play " 1,000 miles" by saint romain

as we walk into sofia's home , i can feel my nerves starting to cool off . i was more than excited to see mason . i'm sure he was going to be the most precious baby ever .

she leads me upstairs and she opens a door that leads into a baby blue room . an older woman is in the room , holding mason . her back is turned away from us but i still recognize her as Lauren , Sofia's mother .

" Lauren ?" I whisper .

she turns around hesitantly , and when our eyes lock , she urgently walks over to me , being sure to hold mason securely so he doesn't get scared .

we engulf one another in a warm hug , and i feel my emotions as they begin to run wild . she was like my second mom when sofia and i were close , and i couldn't hold back from squeezing her so tight.

today is bringing some of my feelings back.

when i let go of Lauren, i grabbed her upper arms , careful not to hurt Mason . we stare into each other's eyes for a moment and i see her eyes well up with tears.

she was always a really sensitive person.

i direct my attention to mason and look into his deep, blue, eyes.

"hey, precious." i give him my pointer finger to grab.

a small giggle escapes his lips and i can't help but feel my heart warm up.

i usually never feel this when i'm around children.

maybe it was the fact that he was my best friend's child.

or maybe he was just ridiculously cute.

either way, i'm feeling something right now, and this feeling is so foreign to me.

i haven't felt this much genuine love in my heart in a long time.

in all honesty, it felt great.

"malia," sofia strikes me a sly look "both mason and my mom are asleep, let's go out."

"where could we possibly go at 11:30 at night?" i cross my arms and scrunch my eyebrows.

"well ... my dad happens to own a lakehouse. it's currently closed to the public but i might be able to pull some strings ..." sofia leans closer to me, smirking.

jeez she may be a mom but that rebellious side of her's still hasn't gone away.

"what's the point?" i shrug my shoulders "it'll only be me and you at the lakehouse. we may as well stay here."

"my brother can take care of that."

sofia's brother was a senior at my school. his name was caleb.

"oh gosh, sofia. it's 11:30. no one's even gonna come."

"malia. it's 11:30pm on a saturday."

she did make a point. no one's asleep at 11:30 at night on a weekend.

especially not in sin city.

i haven't had a good time in a while, so i shrug my shoulders in agreeance.

"fuck it. text your brother."

sofia smiles and pulls her phone out of her pocket.

i then look down at what i'm wearing. it's definitely not party attire.

"sofia, i need to change my clothes."

"i have plenty of shit in my closet. we can find something in there."
