"Come on, Nat, please. You can't tell me there's a new lord of the rings film out and then not come with me to see it!" Steve pleaded, sat at the kitchen counter. "Sorry Steve but I'm training with Clint tonight, just go by yourself if you're that desperate, or take someone else" Natasha replied, putting the teaspoon she used to make her coffee in the dishwasher.
All the avengers had been promised by Fury that they wouldn't be called into any missions today unless the world was ending. Only, Steve didn't know what to do with his day off. That was until Nat had showed him the list of all the films being shown in the cinema and he'd spotted the new lord of the rings. Steve had been obsessed with the books when he was a skinny little kid back in 1940s Brooklyn-he hadn't had much to do other than read and get into fights he couldn't win in some alley or park.
"I can't go by myself, I'd look like a complete idiot! And no one else is going to go with me are they?" Steve said. Natasha just shrugged, taking a sip of her coffee.
"What's this about you looking like an idiot, Dorito?" Tony asked, sauntering into the kitchen and grabbing an apple off the side. "Oh, nothing, don't worry" Steve quickly replied, not really sure how Tony would react to his slight obsession. But he couldn't stop Natasha explaining it anyway. "So you want someone to go with you to see it?" Tony clarified.
"I mean, yeah, but you don't have to. I could always just see it another time.."
"Nah I don't mind. Rhodey made me watch a few of them last year in an attempt to try and make me 'relax'. I was secretly working on my tablet half the time, but I'm up for going anyway. What time?"
"Uh, there's a screening at 7:45, how's that?"
"Cool. It's a date" Tony finished, heading back to his lab to finish off what he was working on. Once he got down there he realised what he said and face-palmed so hard he actually hurt his head.
Meanwhile Steve stayed sat in the kitchen a slightly confused expression and pink dusting on his face. Natasha smirked.A few hours, a shower and a shirt change later, and Steve was waiting by the front door for Tony. Just as he was about to check his watch, the elevator doors opened and Tony walked out, dressed nicely as per usual. "Ready to go, capsicle?" He asked. Steve rolled his eyes slightly at the nickname but hummed in response and they both started to make their way out the door. "As much as I'd love to ride your bike, I'd much rather be in the safety of a car, if you don't mind' Tony said light-heartedly, walking towards a Mercedes he'd left out of the garage earlier.
The car journey was relatively relaxed. A few words of small talk passed between them, but mostly spent in comfortable silence, which Steve found rare with Tony of all people. They arrived at the cinema, keeping their heads down to avoid the publicity. They were both insanely grateful for the darkened theatre, relived they could enjoy a film without the disruption of endearing yet persistent fans.
Soon enough, the ads and trailers were finished and the film began to play-Steve had a huge grin. Tony smiled to himself at the pure look of glee on his friend's face. As the film went on, Tony got more and more confused-maybe I should've paid more attention to the others he thought to himself, but that didn't help him now. After a while, he gave up and just decided to sit back an relax...maybe even..close his eyes..for...a bit...Steve was too engrossed in the film to think much of the weight that had fallen onto his shoulder. That was until the titles rolled and he glanced to his left to see a fast asleep Tony Stark leaning against him. He rolled his eyes, but had an affectionate smile on his face-something about seeing Tony asleep made him seem so human and...adorable. Steve shook the thought out of his head, picking his coat up and gently shaking Tony awake. Initially he tried to nuzzle further into Steve's shoulder, but eventually he woke up a bit, blinking a few times. "Oh it's finished" he mumbled, sleep still evident in his voice. "Yes it has, now come on we better get back" Steve replied, beginning to walk to the end of the aisle. Tony stood, blearily following Steve back to where they'd parked the car, now with it being late, they didn't have to make much of an effort to hide their identities. Tony went to get into the drivers seat, but Steve gently pushed him away, "No way, you're not driving in that state." Normally Tony would argue back, always insisting on driving, but he didn't have the energy to. And besides, he trusted Steve, so why not.
He sat quietly for the short drive home, watching the street lights speed past in a blur of orange.
When they got back, they both walked to the communal kitchen, Steve making the two of them hot chocolate while Tony collapsed onto the sofa that was part of the open-plan room. Steve soon joined him, handing Tony the mug as he sat down. "Thank you for tonight, I had a really nice time, even if you slept through most of the film" Steve said timidly after a while. "Hey, it's not my fault if that Gindalf guy has a boring voice!" Tony replied, smiling. "Gandalf" Steve corrected, returning the smile. They sipped their hot chocolate in comfortable silence, genuinely enjoying each other's company. After a while, Steve noticed Tony's eyelids getting dangerously low and decided he should send him to bed, knowing full well Tony rarely gets enough sleep. "I don't want to say goodnight, not yet" Tony said in an almost pleading tone. "Tony you need to sleep!" Steve tried to reason. "Then I can sleep here" Tony contended. "Like this, see" he continued, suddenly launching himself forward, knocking Steve backwards on the sofa and landing on top of him, in a fit of giggles. Steve couldn't help but laugh too at Tony's childish state. When Tony finally calmed down, he still didn't move off of him, instead making himself comfortable where he was, bundled between the back of the sofa and Steve. "See?" he murmured, head resting against Steve's chest, an arm draped over his stomach. Steve only watched him, as he slowly drifted off to sleep for the second time that evening.
Now feeling he was unable to move, for fear of disturbing the evidently peaceful sleep his friend had fallen into, Steve whisperer to jarvis to turn the lights off and made himself comfortable for the night...Natasha now has some good photos for blackmail.
