Chapter 3: Careless

"Looks like you've hurt your ankle pretty bad." I frowned as I bandaged my friends sore and swollen left ankle in some linen sheets that Shane help me cut up into one long strip so that it resembled a bandage.

"I'll live." Lola sighed, wincing every now and then from the pain of me wrapping it a little too tight at times. I secured the pink bed sheet around her wound with a couple of safety pins and then gave it a little kiss before patting it gently.

"Yeah, you'll live." I smiled, giving my sister-like friend a wink, "if you survived that attack, I'm sure you can survive a sprained ankle."

"I'm thanking my lucky stars it ain't broken!"

I chuckled at her remark and then stood up to examine her arms.

"No bites?" I asked her.

"Zel, I think I'd know if a chunk of my flesh was ripped out, don't you?"

"Doesn't mean you would tell anybody."

Lola rolled her eyes and let out a huff, "my butt still hurts."

"Want me to bandage your coccyx too?" I laughed.

"If you could."

I threw the rest of the pink bedsheet at Lola, "bandage your own butt."

She giggled at my response and got up from her seat, walking over to the mini fridge that wasn't currently working and pulling out an apple juice to sip on. I didn't stop her and didn't tell the rest of the group about it either because after her close call with the dead-one, I think she deserved a juice.

The sound of two heavy footsteps echoed by the door of the RV behind me, startling me slightly and making me jump. I turned to face a worried looking Shane with his shirt unbuttoned just before halfway down his chest, gun bag in hand and dirt smeared on his forearms.

"I'm going out for a bit." He breathed, setting the bag of guns down on the table and pulling out a single rifle.

"Out?" I asked, cocking my head to the side before placing my hand on his rifle and pushing it down slightly to show him I was adamant about him leaving, "where?"

"To look for Sophia with Rick." Replied Shane, "Rick lost her and now us men are going to go put our asses on the line to try and find this girl."

"I'm coming with you." I exclaimed, reaching out for a gun but Shane pulled the bag sharply away from me.

"We have enough people out there and I'm not putting you in that type of danger."

"Look, I'm always going to be in danger twenty four seven whether you like it or not, so let me come and help out."

"We have enough people." He said sternly, his brown eyes burning mine "you're staying right here and you're going to take care of Lola and Carol, okay? Keep everybody busy, on their toes."

I gave him an unimpressed look before spinning around on my heel and folding my arms across my chest to show him that I was pissed off at him.

"Good." He hissed, jogging out of the RV in a hurry and off to a destination unknown to me.

After a few minutes of silence, Lola burst out with a sentence that I did not await, "I don't like the guy."

I looked at her with a confused expression painted on my face, my agitation growing ever so quickly. I furrowed my brows before replying, "what do you mean you don't like him?"

"I don't trust him." She admitted.

"You don't trust Shane?"

She shook her head and bit her lip, "the way he spoke to you just then-"
