"I-I'm sorry, what?" Ariella asked Cooper in disbelief and Cooper remained cool and collected as he faced forward.
"You heard me." he said and Ariella didn't know what to say. Cooper doesn't own her. Why should she have to obey his rules?
"I'm not really understanding what's going on. You needed a favor and I did it for you. That's all this was..." Ariella's voice faded away as she noticed Cooper's grip on the steering wheel tighten.
She reached for her clothes in the back seat and quickly changed, blushing as she did so because of what Cooper had said.
'There's a possibility he was joking.' Ariella tried to convince herself but it wasn't really working. She glanced over at the clock in the car as she was putting her left shoe on. 2:17. Lots of time until 9 tonight. There was probably about an hour and a half of the car ride left to go home.
The silence in the car was awkward. There was just something tense in the air that wouldn't disappear. Ariella hated the arrogant side of Cooper that demanded that no one make her... moan... other than him. What was that even supposed to mean? If they had been boyfriend and girlfriend, that would be totally understandable. But she couldn't forgive the way he was being so possssive with her.
Ariella's mind went back to the moment they shared that morning when they looked into each other's eyes while drinking coffee. She wasn't going to lie and say that she wasn't captivated at that moment.
"Can I go home?" Ariella asked, her voice shaking. Cooper didn't respond. The annoyance inside of her bubbled up.
"I said. Can I go HOM-" she was starting to lose it.
"NO." Cooper said sternly and Ariella felt frustrated.
"What?" her voice snapped at Cooper.
"Until 9, you're stuck with me. And then I'll let you go." he said and Ariella just stared at him. He wouldn't even look at her. So she was basically his prisoner until 9 pm.
"Where are we going?" Ariella said quietly, too tired to even argue with him.
"To destroy this." Cooper pointed to the black box sitting in between their seats. Ariella reached for it and opened it. Inside was an even smaller black box.
She began to feel overwhelmed especially with Cooper glancing at her while driving as she slowly took the box out. She opened the lid and inside was a beautiful ring with a light green stone. The afternoon sunlight made it sparkle and in an instant Ariella was pretty much hypnotized.
"Is this a...?" Ariella began but she was captivated by the beautiful stone.
"Peridot." Cooper said and Ariella nodded.
"The birth stone of August." she said and Cooper became curious and his eyebrows furrowed together.
"You know it?" he asked with a slightly surprised tone and Ariella turned the ring around in her small hands, admiring the gold band with the perfectly shaped stone in the middle.
"Peridot is my birth stone." she said and Cooper hit on the brakes to stop the car at the side of the road immediately, sending their bodies forward and causing Ariella's seat belt to tighten.
"What did you just say?" Cooper asked and Ariella peered at him, shocked by his reaction. She stared at him. There was something in his eyes that frightened her a little bit.
"Peridot is my birth stone." she said carefully and quietly, and he stepped on the gas and made a U-turn.
"Where are we going?" Ariella asked, the ring still in her right hand. But Cooper was too busy dialing a number in his phone to answer her question. He started speaking with an urgent tone.
"Hey Grandpa. Yeah it's me. I found her."
