Kumari sighed. She stared at the tiles of the ceiling in the courtyard, counting them over and over. A devotee had brought her a cheese plate, which she nibbled on.
Kumari was from a long line of Annunaki gods. Her mom's side was descended from Aphrodite and her dad from the prophet Muhammad.
Lineages from Gods and prophets are often protected. Nobody on Planet Earth know that Demigods exist in their own realms, and outside the laws of spacetime.
Kumari had lived in Babylon forever, never really knowing her parents. Instead, she lived with her sisters faraway from it all. She could sometimes look out onto the city and see passengers as they walked, sometimes carrying goods or supplies, but she could not interact with them. All she ever talked to were her own sisters.
Her quarters and that of her sisters existed in a high tower overlooking the city within a palace separated from it all.
There was the courtyard where they would hangout and sometimes swim.
There was the spa where they were nurtured all day to look beautiful and feel healthy in preparation for them being married off.
There were 26 of them in total, now there is 17, but there would be more again as the King and Queen frequently copulated. So did the sisters, cousins, and out of the way relatives more distantly related that wanted to protect their daughters from losing their virtue.
There were the bedrooms with exquisite drapery and comfortable bedding.
There was a prayer room and a meditation room.
The building has long halls.
A greenhouse exists with birds.
Everything you can imagine is there, coupled with all the loneliness.
...
Every so often, they would bring a tutor in to their midst. The tutors could be anything from musicians to painters and to language tutors. The idea being that one of the tutors would lead a sister to their passion, and that passion would often have a lot to do with the realm they would take part in. One of Kumari's sisters was an avid reader of French and Christian/European history. She became a Queen of a medieval realm. Another was an avid piano learner, and she became a wife in a realm where they only spoke in music.
There was one sister. They knew she was different because she did not match many of the other's features with her flaming red hair. She was a love child. Her witch powers did not come until later. She never admitted to it, never hanged out with her own sister, but they would always wake up to their hair singed or an animal crawling in their bed. Tutor after tutor came to no avail. When it was decided she had no intention of learning or getting married, she was kicked out of Babylon forever.
Realizing the history of her sister, that she never met, made Kumari know she had to pick a passion. So the time came for a tutor for meditation. She couldn't say no.
The realms of the Hindus seemed so interesting, and the best possible place to experience freedom of travel. She imagined herself taking on a variety of spiritual practices such as prayer, meditation, and yoga - which is why she visited her prayer room often to read the holy Quran. She had tried many things before - singing, painting, dancing and learning languages. Often, she felt her sisters watching her. They were worried that Kumari would give up and was not as serious in being a good housewife.
She had no intention on her teacher being so cute however. That was the truth of her teacher. His name was Alastair, and he had come from the Gaelic kingdoms. Those lands are a somewhat similar realm to that of the witches, though they claim that no witches have ever gotten in or out. Even though they didn't know if this were true, and many of them still kept on many pagan practices.
Alastair's blue eyes sought out Kumari from the minute he entered the harem. The other sisters were already betrothed or working on more feminine tasks. Alastair, however, he knew that Kumari was interested. She took a seat beside him.
Relationships were not allowed in the harem. Disobeying meant exile for the sisters and would mean death for betrayers. Yet, even if that were true, that didn't mean that Kumari couldn't form a relationship while she was here that was in the form of a friendship and thus be much better prepared for her marriage.
"Sorry you have to deal with all that" laughed Kumari.
"I'm not really offended" said Alastair. "I can tell that marriage is a very important passage for all of you. I only know that you are different, perhaps I can maintain your position here."
Kumari sighed.
"I wish I wasn't here."
He touched her hand for a brief moment.
"I can't imagine what you are going through, but I know with intense study that you can acquire all the knowledge and fortitude to see you through the toughest of situations. Education is a gift you know."
"I do study the Quran sometimes!"
"That's perfect" he said. "Really a good start. However, to be your teacher I am going to have you have to read some other texts. We have philosophy, the Vedas for example. Or some of the confessions of Siddhartha's followers. They aren't available in realms of Earth, but there has been plenty of channelings that have found their way to literature throughout the realms."
Kumari smiled as he talked. He was such a nerd - so passionate about what he was interested in. It was very endearing. She could only imagine that he had no desire to go back to the Gaelic realms.
"Tonight" he said, looking into her eyes, "I want you to go open the windows of your room. It will be a cold night air. Lay down on the ground, bring no blankets with you. Feel the cold air hitting your body, and then you will start to be able to visualize what it is like to control your mind. From there, we can begin training you."
Kumari thanked him and went up to her room. She practiced silence, struggling to clear her mind of any of the thoughts in her head. It was surprisingly difficult. After all, there was a hair on her face. Now that she thought of it, her foot itched a lot. Meditating was so hard!
Having forgotten to open the windows, she then noticed the moon hanging overhead and took to opening them.
The night air was a literal killer. She laid down on the floor, feeling it bite against her skin. This was not a pleasant feeling, in fact, it was a completely miserable one. However, as she lay on the floor, she understood that there was a freedom in the cold. It wasn't completely unpleasant at all. She closed her eyes, and began to feel what Alastair had talked of with clearing her mind. Maybe, if she tried hard enough, she would be able to reach the other realms after all.
