CHAPTER FOUR: NO EXCEPTIONS

+++

His emerald stare simply intensified causing my heart to beat erratically. It was so intense that it made me fear the worst that was yet to come. The hold I had around his neck and arm loosen a little, our eyes still locked with each other.

Fear bundled in the pit of my stomach as neither of us backed away from staring, let alone blink. Mindlessly the hold I had on him continues to loosen, finding myself detach from him. No shocker as he also separated from me.

It was clear as daylight that his world was different from everyone else. His definition of letting go was the complete opposite of mine. It happened so quick and so effortlessly that even the concept of slow motion itself was put to shame.

I was in his embrace a minute ago and now I'm on the floor. He had no intention of either saving me or helping me up. So much for prince charming.

In the midst of having my arse making contact with the floor, my reflexes work fast, the palms of my hand flat on the floor besides my sides. I mentally pray that it was enough to support the sudden weight of myself.

The pain rushed up my arms, my face scrunching up in pain. For the third time, everyone gasped. I turn my head to the side to see a small, shocked crowd still loitering. I had forgotten that they were still here.

The thumping pain subsided, embarrassment now taking its course. I turn my head towards Eleanor to see her also like everyone else. Eyes wide, mouth hung open in disbelief at what just happened.

Some staff were in pairs with hands covering their mouths, lips moving as they spoke. Their eyes constantly moved between me and their peer, never stopping. This was so going to be the talk of the day. Better yet, the talk of the month.

Embarrassment was not even the right word to describe how I felt this very moment.

I bit the inside of my mouth, suppressing any emotion that could show weakness. I made no eye contact with anyone other than the marbled floor. My eyes begin to sting but I push it back, not wanting to break down just yet.

It was funny how quick the tables had turned in a matter of minutes. It was that poor man first and now it was me. Could the day get any worse? I look up to the man seeing him also shocked and mortified. I knew for sure that I was beetroot red.

Still frozen from what happened my gaze then turns to the man. He towered over me like he was king of the place, as if he owned it all. He had his gaze on the crowd for a couple of minutes before it came straight to me.

I didn't know how to feel in the moment so all I did was breath deeply. He didn't hold my gaze for long as he then brought his attention back to the crowd,

"Since no-one is moving with the fuck they're meant to be doing, I guess everyone is handing in their resignation letter yes?"

Like pressing the button 'play' on a remote control, the remaining staff started moving. Their eyes no longer on us, hands no longer covering their lips. Instead, their feet shuffled out of scene, eyes glued on either the stacks of paper they had in their hands or directly at the floor.

No-one dared to look our way as they left the scene. The only person who was still here was Eleanor but that was only because she worked on the ground floor. I noticed from where I was that she too was no longer watching the scene.

The man obviously had also moved on from the scene as he turned on his feet, speaking to his little group of men,

"I'll see you both in the meeting in a couple of days time to finalize everything. Make sure that Joshua is informed on the changes we made, and for the last fucking time, do not make any mistakes. If I see one, even the slightest,"
