We ran and we ran and we ran. Faster than I ever did. And everything started with such a harmless thing as borrowing books from the university library.
I stumbled and gasped. How could they have found us? Both of us panted ridiculously while continuing giving as much space as possible between us and our hunters. If they would catch up ... I felt nauseous about what I had to do then.
"Okay, this way, I know someone who can help us.", Liam panted and dragged me to the right. We were heading towards the airport. Really? What kind of people does he know? But I was happy about every help we could get.
We ran through the front door. There was nobody. Not a single person. The tall, empty and white reception hall flew along my vision. There was a walkway as a second floor. Grey seats were waiting to accommodate waiting people. I had never been in an empty airport before. It didn't feel right.
We arrived at a gate. Liam stopped next to a large floor to top window and turned to me.
"Okay, wait here for a second.", he said. "I go and check everything." I nodded and he ran off.
I looked nervously around. Everything was so silent. Deafeningly silent. I did not want to wait here. I looked out of the window, edgy. There was Liam, talking to this other guy. They walked towards the airplane, when suddenly two other guys appeared, supposedly security. Liam pulled the arm of his acquaintance and backed off a little. But the latter didn't want to listen and talked to the security guys. He looked as if he wanted to tell them that there was no problem and everything's under control. Without a warning whatsoever, one security guy raised his gun and pulled the trigger. I muffled a scream, but Liam luckily had awesome instincts. He still had the acquaintance's arm in his hand and as soon as he had noticed the weapon, he pulled the arm as hard as he could, turned and started running with his acquaintance by his side. But I saw the beam touch the edge of the acquaintance's finger.I sprinted in the same direction as Liam, hoping to find stairs to join them. There weren't any. I ran to the right, turned left and found another gate. I already wanted to jump down the stairs, when I froze. I heard fast footsteps. Of many people. Not just two. Security guards. There must have been more. Where was Liam? Did they find him? Did they shoot him?
I was frozen. I couldn't move. I knew I should, run away, as everyone in their sane mind would do, not wait here for the enemies. But that was my way back to Liam, right? And what if I'd be all by myself now? What, if there was only me left? My hand moved to my belt. Would I use it? Should I use it? I need to get down there, I thought. My hand reached for the handle.
"Beth!", a fantastic familiar voice yell. I swirled around to face Liam and a rush of relief ran through my body. Then, I slapped myself mentally to come back to the here and now and ran towards Liam and grabbed his outstretched hand.
"Marcus has access to a private jet, on the other side of the airport.", Liam explained while running. I nodded shortly towards our new companion. He could come in handy. I was just very sorry for him because he was on our side now.
I was thrilled that we did not encounter any other person. And very suspicious why not. But than we sat in the jet, Marcus started the engine, we lifted up from the ground, the world momentarily looking like a slope. I was pressed in the seat, appreciating the weight on my chest. It felt as if I were hugged and safe.
"Okay, we fly on autopilot now.", Marcus said from the cockpit, stood up and came to us in the back. He sad down next to me. I saw that he hid one of his hands. I looked at him sadly.
"Can I see it?", I asked and stretched out a hand. He looked at me confused. I gestured towards his hidden hand.
"Oh, no, it is nothing.", he said and put on a faked smile. I just looked a him, my hand waiting. His smile vanished and he showed me. His third and forth finger were half gone. There were no blood and I figured it didn't hurt. But I saw the air moving around the two stumps. I pressed my lips together and looked up to Liam. He also stared blankly at Marcus' hand.
"Is there anything we can do?", I whispered. Liam only shrugged.
Marcus shrugged too. "We will see how far it goes.", he said with his rough voice. He held up his hand and examined it. "If it only takes these two fingers, I can do my metal fork bending only my thumb."
