"johnny we really gotta start my english paper soon, i'm running out of time to collect precious information".

mackenzie struggles to keep up with johnny as he walks down the hallway, his pace faster than usual. the short girl puffs and huffs, taking deep breaths when he finally stops at his locker.

"damn you walk fast" she sighs, a sharp pain shooting up her side. and this laid ease and gents is why she doesn't do sports.

"and you're really slow, hurry up, we need to stop by mr andrews office quickly" he says over his shoulder, taking off again.

mackenzie curses, remembering she told hayden she'd meet him before first period so they could figure out how hayden is going to ask out annie. it needs to be special and it has to be fast.

"actually john, i'll catch up with you at lunch okay, i have to be somewhere" she smiles sadly.

johnny stops walking, turning around with his face showing confused features.

"be where exactly?" he questions, crossing his arms over his chest.

"you see, i'm meeting up with hayden" she almost whispers. why was she nervous to tell him that?

johnny smirks. "you cheating on me ziegler?".

"no, no of course not, it's not what you think, we're just -" she rambles until johnny cuts her off, chuckling at how she panicked.

"chill kenz, we ain't actually together, remember?" he says almost in a dull tone.

mackenzie has no idea why he has an attitude this morning but she doesn't like it and she won't be in his presence until he stops acting like an asshole.

"how could i forget" she says bitterly.

she turns on her heels, making her way down the hallway and ignoring as johnny calls after her. she knows people are watching him squirm for her attention and she definitely knows that they'll be the talk of the lunch room today. rumours will start spreading, most of them insisting that they broke up even though that's impossible because they aren't even dating. not really. and johnny reminded mackenzie of that not only 4 minutes ago.

"woah, you good kenzie?" hayden asks, startled by the loud noise that came from the many textbooks mackenzie dropped on the library table.

"peachy, can we hurry this up" she asks, annoyed. not by hayden of course, he's actually being a nice guy. unlike johnny. what an ass.

"are you sure? you don't seem fine" he argues, clicking his pen.

"well i am okay, now can we please just focus on how you're going to ask annie out" mackenzie snaps but manages to whisper the last part. the last thing either of them need is for someone to overhear and go running to annie.

deciding that he'd rather keep his head attached to his body, hayden nods, opening up his notbeook where he's been scribbling down ideas.

"public proposal" he speaks clearly.

creasing her eyebrows, mackenzie shakes her head.

"nope. if you do it in public, she'll feel like she won't have a choice but to say yes so you both don't get embarrassed. what's the next one?" she dismisses his suggestion.

hayden pretends not to be hurt that she shut down his best idea and moves on to the smaller less amazing suggestions.

"you're going to think its really dumb" he mutters, not wanting to tell mackenzie about the next one.

"what?" she asks.

"it's not manly or exciting and it definitely won't 'woo' her" he says a little bit more clearly.

sighing, mackenzie frowns. she reaches over the table and picks up the notebook. she begins to read, hayden's messy handwriting making it difficult for her to make out the words. the harder she tries, the more she starts to make sense of the messy words that are scribbled across the page.

mackenzie feels her heart melting when she reads all the small details and thought hayden has put into this idea. he speaks about having a picnic at night under the stars at the look out point. he goes into description about how he's going to make her favourite peanut butter and jelly sandwiches without the crust and bottled water but using paper straws because it shows he cares about the environment. then he talks about the mood he wants to set. a comfortable one that annie feels she can be open in and trust him. it all makes mackenzie very jealous. she wants a love like that. someone who will go above and beyond for her. why can't she have that?

"come on kenzie you're leaving me in suspense here" he chuckles nervously from across the table.

when mackenzie shakes her head, hayden loses hope, until she starts speaking of course.

"absolutely perfect hayden, please go with that one, i'm begging you" she says, a desperate tone present in her voice.

"wait you actually like that?" he says in disbelief.

"it's going to guarantee you a yes" she says in definitely.

"wow, okay thanks kenzie" he smiles, collecting his things and joining the brunette girl as they walk out of the library.

"no problem, she's going to love it" mackenzie beams, feeling very excited for her new friend and hayden. they'll make a great couple.

"oh and how'd you know that pb and j without the crust is my favorite?" mackenzie jokes.

hayden scratches his neck almost nervously, shrugging his shoulders too.

"must just be a girl thing i guess" he chuckles. hayden spots johnny and carson walking down the staircase and decides to catch up with them.

"bye kenzie, thanks for the help" he smiles genuinely before taking off. mackenzie waves, heading to history class.

"yo johnny wait up bro" hayden calls, almost reaching the dirty blonde haired boy.

johnny turns around, nodding to carson who continues to walk on. hayden's face is almost red, he must've been running.

"what's sup man?" johnny asks his best friend.

"just wanna say thanks for giving me that mushy tumblr type of shit, idea. mackenzie said it was perfect and i should ask annie out that way" he smiles.

johnny's face contorts into a worried expression. "you didn't tell kenz it was my idea though, right?" he asks, hoping for the answer he wants.

"nah of course not, anyway see you in math" hayden says, patting johnny on the back before taking off down the hallway.

johnny finds himself smiling, his gaze on the floor. he tightens his grip around the straps of his backpack.

"she liked it" he mutters happily to himself, making his way to class.
