"Wait, wait, wait." Lulu said to me from across the lunch table from me. "She asked to kiss you?" She asked, and I nodded with a giddy smile. "And then she asked if you would kiss her." She said, trying to make sense of it. "Wait, so you saw her shirtless before you even kissed her? And now you guys can't keep your eyes off each other." She cackled, shaking her head before taking a drink of her Gatorade. "That's funny as hell." She exhaled happily, pulling the flaps of her blue and yellow letterman jacket over her chest.
"Tell me, how's it going with Josie, now that you're playing football?" I asked, raising my brow with intrigue, and she sighed, picking at her salad in disappointment.
"At this point, I'll have to sing and dance for her attention." She complained, and I shrugged, drinking my orange juice.
"Why not? She probably wants someone who's creative too. Would you really switch teams for someone who plays the same as the people on your team?" I inquired, and she shook her head. "Exactly. Bring something else to the game. Something... more. Substance. Show her how you work a piano or a guitar. Show her what your fingers can do." I winked, "If anyone would know, it's me, right?"
"Yeah, I guess you're right." She sighed. "Now I'm stuck as Riverdale's running back." She groaned in defeat.
"You're such a good athlete, Lulu." I reminded, "Besides, now you're getting good grades, and not only does that work for the girls, but you can go to college one day, AND you have two new jackets to add to your collection." I winked before getting up and dumping my tray.
"Where are you going?" She called at me.
"Cheryl wants to study." I said over my shoulder, and she hummed at me.
"Sure... Studying." She said skeptically, and I grinned before exiting the cafeteria and running out to the parking lot, where Cheryl's car was parked beside my bike. I opened the door, and was met with the beautiful eyes I had found myself dreaming of.
"Good afternoon, Toni." She smiled, passing me a white bag. I opened it, and noticed it had a churro in it.
"How did you know I love churros?" I asked with a grin on my face, and she shrugged.
"Who doesn't?" She asked, and I shrugged.
"You're right." I admitted, and she moved the car's gear out of park to back up. "Where are we going?" I asked, and she smiled up at me.
"Where do you think?" She asked rhetorically, and I knew right away.
"You're gonna skip school voluntarily?" I gasped, and she shrugged with a big smile on her face.
"I have free period." She blushed. "We can study at your place." She winked, and I hummed.
"I like the sound of that."
It was ten minutes before we got to the edge of the forest and up the ladder to the treehouse.
We'd been doing this at least every other day since we drove out here in her car two weeks ago, and it's become kind of our spot, despite the fact that Sweetpea and Fangs, and Lulu know where it is. I mean, they haven't been out here since we were kids, so I guess it's just for Cheryl and I. It's where we can talk and laugh during her free period, or after school. Especially since she made me actually start going to class."So what do you wanna do for a career, Cheryl?" I asked of my companion from the floor rug, staring up at the tree branches blankly, a cigarette between my lips as I smoked it slowly.
