"So, you wanna do something today?" Preston sat up, pulling a shirt on. Alec was in the bathroom, probably puking. No. Not probably. Definitely.
"Does it sound like I want to do anything?" Alec's retort was sharp and slurred. Still slightly drunk.
Preston walked in, resting a hand on Alec's back as he faced himself in the mirror. "Well, maybe you should take it easy on the liquor?" Preston might have said it jokingly, but the tone lingered with seriousness.
Alec only shot him a glare.
They'd been together a while now, and Preston kept telling himself that Alec never meant it when he would hit him. It was the alcohol. Right?
Preston wrapped a toned arm around Alec as he finished brushing his teeth. "I love you.." Preston whispered.
Alec looked at him, blue eyes wide. Shocked, Alec only stared at him. He was about to answer when his phone rang. "Could you get it?" Alec asked to change the subject. Preston's weak smile faltered a little. He nodded.
The voice on the other end was deep and familiar, "Hey man! It's Kevin!! There's a sick party goin' on!! You gotta come man!"
Preston replied with a friendly tone,"Sure, usual place?"
"Yup!" exclaimed Kevin.
"Sounds good, but I will have to ask my boyfriend."
"Okay bro."
And with that, Preston hung up the phone. Alec came into the room and slipped on a clean shirt. Preston smiled. "Hey, Kevin invited us to a party."
Alec gave him a single look.
"I'm pretty sure it's open bar..." Preston said, a little quieter.
Alec replied fairly quickly after that, "I mean, I guess we can go..."
Preston gave Alec a quick peck on the cheek.

Magnus had been hanging around with mundanes lately. He couldn't say that he enjoyed their company, but they definitely knew how to throw parties! Magnus had been going to so many parties he was rarely at his flat anymore. He only went to change his clothes and to perhaps get a few hours of sleep. It was a miracle chairman hadn't starved to death yet.
Magnus hadn't been in touch with any of the shadowhunters since the breakup, so he was very surprised when he saw that Jace was calling him.
"Hello?" he asked with a little uncertainty. Perhaps it was just a mistake that Jace was calling, he thought to himself.
"Hey Magnus," Jace said, sounding unsure.
Jace? A Herondale? Sounding unsure? That was a first. "Hi. Jace, what's this about?"
Jace sighed, "Magnus, it's Alec. He needs you."
Magnus's eyes went wide with shock, but then he remembered and became angry, "Alec broke up with me! He thought being with me caused trouble! He doesn't need me! He thought being with me hurt you..."
"I know what he thought, but he was wrong. I hurt me. He wouldn't have made it there in time anyways. There is no way he could've helped me. Besides, I'm healed now, it's no big deal," Jace finished.
"Why would he need my help?" Magnus asked, wondering.
"Because he's dating a mundane!" Jace exclaimed, "Plus, he's been drinking, Magnus."That caught Magnus' attention. Alec drinking? I couldn't be. "Well, a few drinks won't hurt him," Magnus said.
"No Magnus, he gets wasted. He goes out every night and comes home shit faced. He gets violent, Magnus. Like, abusive."
Magnus' jaw hung slightly open. Alec? His sweet little Alec, getting drunk? Abusing a mundane? No. "That's not true," he said, but who was he trying to convince? Himself or Jace?
Jace sighed, "Magnus, please, he's a wreck. He barely trains anymore, and when he does, it's-its like he's someone completely different. Please. Just talk to him or something?" His voice was unsure but pleading. A Herondale, pleading? Something was definitely wrong.
"O-okay," Magnus' voice was soft and broke. He cleared his throat. "Okay. Thanks for the call. Jace. " He hung up.
Magnus sat down, and brought his knees to his chest. Alec? Drunk? Sympathy flashed through him before rage overtook it. No. This was Alec's doing. He broke it off with him. Even as Magnus thought the words, he knew his love for Alec never left.
I can handle it tomorrow, Magnus thought. But for tonight, one more party.
•••
Alec slipped on a pair of black jeans and a grey hoodie. Perfect for blending in. The party had most likely already started and Alec was desperate for some booze. He hadn't been training with Jace lately, but he was still hunting. Only, he killed the demons not because it was the right thing to do, but because he was afraid of what he would do if he didn't kill them.
Preston was gonna be back soon. Alec was still at his apartment. Feeling a bit sluggish, Alec laid down on the sofa and closed his eyes. Only, when he closed his eyes, he saw flashes of a brilliant smile and beautiful cat like eyes staring at him like he was the most precious thing on this earth.
"Darling, you really are incredible." It was like he was hearing his satin voice in his ear. He could almost feel those slender arms wrapping him in an embrace. Those lips tenderly pressing against his own.
"Magnus..." Alec sighed.
He was startled awake by a hand gripping his shoulder. Preston.
"Come on, the party has already started. Sorry for making you wait so long, love." Preston smiled a crooked smile, his hazel eyes shining.
But Alec noticed something. Just below his left eye, a small cut blemished his beautiful face. Alec placed his hand gently on Preston's cheek.
"What happened?" he asked, genuine concern filling his voice.
Preston's smile faltered and he moved away from Alec's hand. Preston knew what happened. Alec did it. Last night when he pushed him away. Pushed him a little too hard. Preston had lost his footing and slipped. His face met the counter and Alec had helped him up, even cleaned up the cut. "Oh, just another drunk rumble at the bar," he lied through his teeth. The old yet familiar bitter taste of another lie. Alec didn't mean it. He loves me... Preston thought.
Alec studied his face, but then stood up, heading for the door.
"Alec," Preston said quietly. "I love you." It was hardly above a whisper.
Alec didn't turn his head. Preston barely caught his reply. "I know."
A tear trailed down Preston's cheek as he swiped at another falling down.
