Chapter 19: time of War

Madison Square Garden

They had a couple of seconds. Sitting on the upper stands meant that they was cut of for the majority of the soldiers, but there was still at least 1000 men that was right behind them, delayed by the confusion of what was happening. Not for long though. TLW heard the muffled voice of Diavolous fading as he commanded his army to chase them. "This way!" he screamed to her, and lead her down the stairs to the first floor. The first burst of bullets hit the floor behind them, before a muffled scream was heard. TLW knew exactly what was happening. As soldiers started shooting against the moving target they did not take into consideration that other would jump into the crossfire and get unwillingly gunned down. They almost fell down the last set of stairs. TLW looked in both direction, they had two seconds before they were surrounded.
"JUMP!"
"What?" she did not have time to say anything before TLW lifted her above the railing and one floor down. They both landed 6 meter down below on a pile of legion banners, before they rolled over in the same moment to the side. Not second later bullets rained down from above. They were right in front of the entrance now.

At the same moment four guards stormed in from the outside, attracted to the bullet sounds. TLW and Nina reacted at the same moment and half of their chambers against them. They fell down, not being able to react before it was too late. They started to run against the entrance, dogging the bullets on the way. As they stormed out into the dark night of the New York ruins and disappeared they felt the presence of a war approaching. What they did not see was the Malpais looking out from the panorama window at the former executive lounge smiling as he saw the two intruders disappearing into the ruins. Only twenty seconds later hundreds of men was running behind, but stopped as they realized that they did not see the intruders anymore.

Battery Tunnel

" Close it down now!" Nina shouted to the Minuteman standing at the entrance from the island of Manhattan. They had finished the door that lead to Battery Tunnel and Governor Island.
"But we have reinforced the door...."
"An army is approaching us. If they find this tunnel we are doomed"
"Wait, I have an idea." TLW said slowly. They had run for four hours back to the entrance barely catching their breath.
"Lets close this, but we need to get back to the governor Island now and prepare our defenses. Malpais will move his forces quickly now that he knows that we knows."

Camp Kasbian Outside the Core Capital Wasteland

There were 40 men lined up in four lines of 10. Reilly looked at them, they were all men and the first recruits to go through the new established training regimen for the armed forces of the Capital Wasteland. They had all been given green training overalls that would serve as uniforms for the next 15 weeks. If there some talents among them they would be given the possibility to train with the Steels and might one day join the ranks.

It took a year to plan and implement the new military infrastructure. There were tons of problems that needed to be addressed. Military doctrines needed to be written, drill sergeants needed to be trained and a clear hierarchy needed to be drawn. There were also ideas about splitting up the forces into a police force for civilian duties but it was decided that it was too demanding when it came to resources. Unlike the soldiers that now served these young recruits will learn military combat, medical first aid, close firearms combat and military communications techniques.

"Now, who can tell me what this is?" The drill sergeant held up an ordinary laser rifle.
"A laser rifle Sir" came from one of the recruits.
" That's correct. This is one of three main firearms you will need to learn. Mechanic, laser and Plasma. All of them will give someone a really bad day if used correctly. Unlike a mechanic bullet the laser uses bolts from cells. A cell like this" he held up a power cell" can shot 46 bolts before empty. A laser bolt hurts and it hurts badly. In worst case scenario it can make you ash as the intense heat starts a chain reaction in your blood that will burn you from inside out within a second."
