It’s 7:20 the ceremony is supposed to start at 8:00pm, good we still have some time. I step back and take note of my reflection in my full-length mirror, my dark brown, shoulder length hair has been fastened into a loose bun with tendrils framing my face. My makeup is done lightly as I don’t like too much, the charcoal eyeliner I applied earlier emphasizes my dark brown eyes, accented by my long eyelashes. My full lips have been painted a light pink that blends in and looks almost natural. My dress hugs my curves and fans out over my legs, its brightness contrasts with my chocolate skin as if I’m glowing. I look over at my black trench coat and heels, my look is completed for the most part, just one more thing… I take up the earrings Mom gave to me in the car and put them on. Then I’m searching my jewelry box, I find what I’m looking for and pull out a white gold ring with diamonds encrusted with eight diamonds, which are molded into the shape of a loose X. My father gave my mother the ring on their 14th anniversary, she was ecstatic at first and wore it all the time, then one day she stopped. I found the ring sitting there on her dresser and decided to wear it, she didn’t seem to mind just warned me not to wear it to certain places. I slide the ring onto the fourth finger of my right hand. It’s cool metal grounds me, relieves some of the unreasonable jitters I’ve suddenly developed. I try to shake it off as tonight is supposed to be super special “I can do this!” I mentally remind myself. My mom appears and knocks on my open bedroom door, her eyes alight with pride.
“Sweetheart…” She breathes as her hand goes to cover her mouth.
“You look stunning, I simply HAVE to take pictures!” She squeals as her face changes into a wide smile. Great more family photos…. I’m not all that into taking pictures, there are already so many people my age treating it like the newest pandemic. I find constant selfies documenting everything someone does every minute to be so stupid! I just don’t see the point; I mean it does make sense if it’s a special occasion like tonight but everyday? So unnecessary…
“Alright, if you must.” I sigh.
“Oh come on, you look so pretty in that dress! I must have a permanent memory of it.” Mom gushes, she briefly disappears and returns with a digital camera and begins tapping away at the camera screen. She’s just about to ask me to pose for my 5th picture when the doorbell rings. Thank You Katie! I’ll have to remember to buy her ice cream later for saving me.
“Oh that must be Katie, I’ll let her in then I’ll make sure everything’s locked up. Once you girls are ready, go ahead and turn on the alarm. I’ll be in the car with Katie’s Mom and sister, don’t take too long!” She says as walks down the hall and descends the stairs. I can hear my mom greet Katie at the door, compliment her on how she looks and the footsteps of someone coming up the stairs, I’m looking for the silver anklet I got on sale to wear for tonight and remember I left it in the pouch I keep in my closet.
“Felicia? Are you ready?” Katie calls as she enters my room, when she doesn’t see me she calls out again.
“Hey! Where’d you go?” She asked spinning around, I emerge from my closet setting the anklet on my left ankle, I straighten smoothen out my dress and look at Katie. Her blue eyes go wide and round with surprise and her small mouth falls open. My own eyes go wide with surprise as I take in her ensemble, we stare in stunned silence for a couple of minutes. Katie’s sky blue dress is one shoulder like she mentioned before, the material is chiffon and long. It pools at her feet like ribbons of water, her blond hair has been pinned into a topknot and she wears gold, dangling earrings. Her bright blue eyes are highlighted by nude makeup and light kind of eyeliner, her mascara elongates her short eyelashes and finally her lipstick is a bright pink. Katie’s matching sandal type heels come into my sightline as I step to the side for another angle of view, they peak out from the modest slit that the dress provides. She looks incredible! Her entire outfit makes her look like a goddess from the sun, the dress was definitely the right choice, it makes her entire being shine.
