Morgan

Chapter 1| 'Only twenty-three'

Tears streamed down Morgan's face as she drove down the highway. She had just received some of the worst news she could ever have heard. Her grandmother and primary caretaker since she was four, Nana Barb, had been diagnosed with stage two lung cancer.

On top of that, she had been fired from her terrible job, and learned her alcoholic, flaky mother was returning home. She really didn't want to return back to the medium sized yellow house, with the blue sofa she had been sitting on her entire life, the same sofa where Nana Barb, always a strong woman, laid feebly. No, Morgan decided, she couldn't do that.

Morgan Sue Thompson, born Morgan Sue Casper, arrived on March 18, 1995 to Stephanie Lee Thompson, 16, and Bradley Jefferson Casper, 22. Stephanie had never taken responsibility for a thing in her life, and she was not about to start now. Instead, Brad took care of his daughter until two months after her fourth birthday, when he was killed in a logging accident. She was handed over to Stephanie, who promptly abandoned her at her mothers house.

Barbra Leanne Thompson, was 42 years old at the time, did not want the child. But she was much too prideful to let her be put into foster care, or up for adoption. Instead she raised the girl firmly, and never brought up the past. When Stephanie was arrested, she simply bailed her out, and never spoke of it again. In fact, Morgan had never even known she had a mother until she was eleven. She was a bit of an, ahem, sheltered child. Stephanie had shown up out of the blue, and Morgan had opened the door. She could remember it like it was yesterday.

Morgan had the best childhood she could have, basically being an orphan. Sure, she often missed her father, but Nana Barb took care of her well, and she was spoiled silly. She grew to be a fine, independent woman. But she knew, she couldn't live without Nana Barb. Especially at this point in her life. She was, after all, only twenty- three.
