Chapter Six

Dan's POV

It was like a nightmare come true. As soon as he stumbled through that door, I knew who he was and I couldn't believe it. He was my best friend in high school. We had lost contact over the years but I knew who he was. I'm not sure if he remembered who I was or if I was even there considering the fact that he was mainly looking at Danny.

I tightened my grip on the steering wheel and my knuckles turned white as tears began to fall slowly, making their way down my face. I wish I could've said goodbye but he was already gone before I could do anything. Danny hadn't said anything since I told her he was my best friend but I could see her out of my peripheral vision. She sat, staring through the windscreen. What was she thinking about? Was what I just told her just setting in? The silence around us was deafening.

"I..I shot your best friend?" She whispered, her voice hoarse from the silent tears cascading down her face. I slowly nodded and refused to make eye contact with her. I wasn't mad or anything it had to be done I just couldn't watch her cry.

"I'm not mad," I told her. She sighed deeply and wiped the tears from her face. Her long wavy red hair which was the colour of fire fell in front of her face and down her shoulders. She was beautiful. I didn't like her or anything but I could admit that yes, she was beautiful.

"I'm still sorry," she whispered before walking back towards where the bunks were. I could hear her whispering to someone behind me. The voice sounding somewhat like Bradens which meant that it was now his shift. I decided to pull over on the side of the road and make sure he's awake enough before he starts driving.

"You ok, man? Looks like you've been crying," Braden asked. I nodded and walked around him so I could find the bunk I would be sleeping in. Braden grabbed a bottle of water but before he could start drinking it Danny made him pour out a quarter of it to drink. She was really making sure that we had enough food. I found whatever bunk I was meant to sleep in and collapsed into it, feeling myself drifting off into a deep sleep.

Danny's POV

I woke up slowly to the sound of everyone laughing and singing. It felt strange because for a moment I completely forgot where I was and what had happened yesterday. There was that feeling of enlightenment like everything was perfectly normal and yesterday was just a dream except I didn't come crashing down into the realisation that no, nothing was normal. I guess I was just used to it by now.

I rolled out of my bunk, hitting  the hard wooden floor with a thud. Ok, I really needed to stop that because I was sure it would cause me some brain damage in the near future and the fact that I was on a top bunk made it hurt twice as much. I walked out of the bunk area and saw that everyone was eating. Wait..

"Hey, look who's finally awake!" Jamie smiled. I ran over to the trashcan that was under one of the counters. I shuffled through the trash to find four empty cans of soup in there.

"You guys are fucking idiots! What did I tell you?! Count the rations and the portions! You're going to get us killed!" I yelled. I was absolutely infuriated. I had worked out exactly how much food we would have to last us for six months and exactly what to eat when and they had to go and screw it all up.

"Oh shit! I'm sorry, Danny," Quinn said apologetically but me being me, wasn't having any of it.

"No, you know what? You can work out how much we have left. You can work out when we eat and how much we eat daily. You can work out how long the food is going to last because you guys don't understand that soon enough we will not have enough food to last us forever! People have the same idea as us,  you know?! It's every man for himself!" I practically screamed. Everyone was dead silent. I was never an angry person but right now, I was fuming and all I wanted to do was survive.

"I'll be in my bunk. Don't fuck this up," I informed, storming off into the bunk areas. Everything had just turned to shit. I was trying to be the good guy here and work out everything and make sure we would be healthy in order for us to make it to Ballarat. I was on the border of a break down I could not believe what had just happened.. Slowly, tears began to make their way down my cheeks in a steady stream.

"Danny?" I heard a voice ask. I wiped my face quickly and peered outside to see Ben.

"What?" I asked coldly.

"We're all sorry. Dan suggested looking for a servo or a small milk bar that we could ransack to get supplies. We forgot that we needed to ration the food I guess, not everyone has gotten used to the fact that we're in the middle of a zombie apocalypse as much as you have. It's hard to get our heads wrapped around it, you know? No one could ever possibly think this would really happen," Ben said. I smiled and wiped away a few tears. I could admit that he made me feel a little better but I was still rather angry.

"I'm just going to stay here for a little. Try and sleep, you know? It's almost my shift," I said. He smiled and nodded before leaving the bunk room.
