Danny's POV
The RV suddenly came to abrupt halt which, in the process, made me slam my head into the roof of my bunk. I rolled out with a loud groan and made my way to the front of the RV to see why we had stopped.
"Uh, guys?" I asked. Everyone had gathered to the front of the RV and it was filled with a sepulchral silence which made my stomach turn. Something was definitely wrong.
I peered out the windscreen to meet what everyone's eyes were so terrified about. My eyes trailed along the road and met the sight which almost made me scream.
The streets were lined with hundreds of bodies, some young children and all were in the middle of decomposing. I covered my mouth as the scent of rotting flesh I had already learned but hadn't become accustomed to found it's way through the vent systems in the vehicle.
"Jesus, this is just...can we turn back?" Braden asked, horrified at the sight in front of him.
"No, we have to keep going," Ben said sternly. No one moved and no one wanted to drive.
"I'll do it," Quinn piped up. I was shocked. Quinn was usually quite timid like she didn't want to do anything out of her comfort zone. "I mean, someone has to do it, right?" she finished.
She sat behind the wheel and stared directly at the sight in front of her. I was too paralyzed to move let alone look away as we began to drive slowly through the masses of dead, decaying people.
"What if they're not dead?" Dan whispered. I looked outside once more, overlooking the bodies of the decrepit and dismembered beings littering the highway.
"Quinn wait! Drive, slowly." Her foot slowly found the accelerator again and we began the suspenseful journey through all the bodies, our shotguns in arms. Quinn looked absolutely petrified as she stared at the distant highway. Then, I heart it, a scream.
Ben stuck his gun out the window and fired, hitting an infected in the chest. As I watched it's torso that had been exploded fly in all directions, Jamie ran over to Quinn who looked like she was about to pass out.
Jamie's POV
Quinn looked as though she was about to pass out. Her face had turned three shades whiter than it was meant to be and I could see sweat starting to bead along her forehead.
"Quinn, let me drive. You need to go rest," I told her and without protest, she got out of the drivers seat and hobbled into the bunk area.
"Jamie! Floor it!" Braden yelled. My foot found the accelerator and we began speeding down the highway, watching as the infected faded to a blur in the distance.
Danny's POV
The hours began to roll by and Quinn had been asleep for all of them. I felt worried, usually the heat never got to her and she looked as though she had just seen a ghost. I guess, anyone would be worried for their friend.
Jamie was still driving and the road was just barren and peaceful. Everything felt as though it would calm down for a few days.
"Danny, there's a gas station just up ahead. Should we stop?" Jamie asked. I nodded and he pulled into the abandoned place. It didn't look like it had been raided, yet.
Ben, Dan and I ran into the store while Jamie and Braden watched over Quinn and filled some petrol cannisters. We threw as much canned food and vacuum packed food into a duffle bag as well as most of the bottles of water. I didn't feel like being greedy, someone was bound to stumble upon this place it'd be nice to give them some hope.
Once we had loaded up we got back into the van and drove off. I went into the bunk area to check on Quinn while Ben and Dan emptied the duffle bag into the cupboards and labelled the food.
"Quinn are you alright? Do you need anything?" I asked. Her skin had now restored its original colour and overall, she was just looking a lot better than before.
"Hhh..what? Oh, yeah could I have a little bit of water?" She asked, still dazed. I smiled and walked over to the fridge. When I returned I could see that Quinn had sat up but had a look on her face like something was seriously wrong.
"Quinn, what's the matter?" I asked, rushing to her side. She clutched the side of her t-shirt and tears began to surface in the corners of her eyes. Slowly, she lifted up the side to see a huge wound the size of a baseball cover her side. It was purple and seemed to be oozing puss and I could still see the teeth marks. I looked into the eyes of the friend I had known for years. I was not ready to lose her and I could see she was not ready to lose me.
"I'm so sorry."
