Chapter Five
We drove down the highway, only stopping for petrol to fill up some tanks and stocking up on food. I couldn't get the image of shooting that guy out of my head. It replayed over and over again and it wouldn't leave me alone. Why did I feel so goddamn guilty?
"Hey guys, I'm surprised I haven't died yet. Remember on the meet videos we put up on YouTube you all said I would die first. Well, I'm not dead so, ha!" Ben laughed. I chucked a water bottle at him and he caught it, taking a swig from it.
"You never know," Quinn told him. It was nice we could joke around after what had just happened. Everything felt slightly normal again and it was great. Jamie was trying to fix the TV which was showing mostly static but after awhile a man with a look of pure terror appeared on the screen with a microphone inside what looked to be the channels studio.
"Anyone who's left out there. If anyone is watching, run. There has been an outbreak from the Royal Melbourne Hospital. A potential cure for cancer has mutated into this..this..disease. I warn you do not access water from the taps, drink bottles of water or boil the tap water. Do not go near any infected or potential infected. If you have been recently infected go to the nearest hospital there are medical staff there who know how to treat the disease. There is no known cure yet but they're trying the best that they can..." The man trailed off and suddenly, there was a crash and the camera shook. Someone screamed and there was a high pitched shriek. The man ducked behind a table and yelled before the camera was knocked over and blood splattered onto the screen.
I quickly shut it off and tried to calm myself down. No where was safe, we couldn't trust anyone. I didn't even know if my own parents were alive or even my other friends. Soon enough, the road hit dirt and we were in the country.
"Guys, we need to lighten the mood. I don't think the virus has made it out this far," Braden tried to reassure.
"Yet," I corrected him. He knew I was right, they wouldn't be able to contain the virus for very long. It'll spread slowly and reach Sydney in at least a week. This virus will spread like wildfire, there is nothing we can do about it.
I stared out the window, admiring the wildlife as it flew past my window. What I knew to be a beautiful place is now about to be destroyed. The RV came to an abrupt halt. There was a man outside who looked like they were obviously infected shuffling across the road in front of us. I held my breath, not wanting it to realise we were here and attack us even if it was six of us and one of him. I had seen enough death for one day.
I seemed to move on so I breathed out with a sigh. Suddenly, it turned its head sharply towards the RV and screamed, lunging at the bonnet of the RV and began beating it with its rotting fists. Quinn grabbed her rifle and ripped open the door. She aimed her gun at its head and fired, watching its head explode onto the windscreen in a blast of red and green. I retched although nothing came back up since what was left of breakfast had already digested making me realise that someone had to ration the food out.
"Hey guys, where is the duffle bag with all the food in it? I'm gonna ration out the food," I asked no one in particular. Jamie pointed to the bag in the back next to the kitchenette and I dragged it over to the bench area in the back so I could begin sorting out the food.
After I had emptied out the contents of the bag, I counted 50 cans of soup, various meats, noodles and I also counted 65 bottles of water which meant we would need more food and water as soon as possible. I sorted the food out into weekly portions and noted down how much we would have.
"We have enough food to last us about a month but we need way more considering there are six of us and four out of the six of us are grown men so I could be wrong. We raid any stores we come across, fuck the police we need to survive," I instructed. I opened up the cupboards to see if there was anything I could cook the cans in. I couldn't find any pots so I decided to heat each can on the stove and luckily I had found utensils so it would be easier to use. I handed everyone a can and sat down to eat mine. Dan had pulled over on the side of the road and had joined us at the couches that were opposite each other. This RV was probably a tour bus or something because it was quite large. There were eight bunks in the back and a bench on one side of the bus and the TV. Then there was the couches we were sitting on and the drivers seat and passenger.
"We need to take turns with driving. Make shifts, you know? I'm happy to keep driving for awhile but only for a few hours because I need my rest too. I say two hour shifts? Is that ok with everyone?" Dan asked. We all nodded. Luckily, Quinn and I were on our P plates so we didn't have to worry much about whether we could drive or not.
Once we had finished we threw our cans out the window and progressed down the road. It was around 6:30 and I was already getting tired. Braden had already gone to sleep since he volunteered to take the next driving shift. Quinn and Ben were making small talk so I decided to go talk to Dan.
"What's up?" I asked, taking a seat in the passenger seat. He kept his eye contact on the road and tightened his grip on the steering wheel. He then sighed deeply and shook his head. A stray tear escaped his left eye and rolled down his cheek although he wiped it away quickly before he shook his head again and let out a shaky breath.
"I knew that man, Danny," He whispered. His voice was broken just like what his heart must have been.
"How?" I asked.
"He...he was my best friend."
