                        Elijah’s POV

“This is kind of awkward, isn’t it?” Erika adds, twirling a piece of hair around her finger. God, she was so beautiful… And she was all mine. Well, almost. I was still quite uncertain about this Kol ordeal. I knew Grace was hiding something from me, I could feel it.

We had been friends too long and at one point, we were bonded. Even though the bond is gone, I can still tell how she’s feeling and sometimes, what she’s thinking. And no, I don’t need compulsion for that…

“Awkward simply means lacking a particular skill. In this case, we haven’t learned how to communicate with one another, but I wouldn’t worry. I’m sure we’ll learn very soon.” On that note, I heard the front door open. Knowing that Grace and Niklaus had returned, I went to meet them. “Please excuse me, Erika.” I walk out into the foyer and find them both waiting for me. “I believe you owe me some news?” I watch Grace carefully.

She nods. “Yes, I do. Would you join me outside?”

I follow her out and into the garden. She sits down on a nearby bench as I join her. “So? Is it true or not?” I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to know the answer to that, but I knew it was best to find out sooner than later.

“Elijah, Kol does share a similar aura, much like the one Erika has, however, it isn’t pure. It’s tainted with darkness.” I was certainly glad it wasn’t exactly the same, but I didn’t understand what tainted meant.

            I shake my head. “I’m afraid I don’t follow.”

“I’m not sure what it means, Elijah, and there is only one way to find out…”

She didn’t have to say it, I already knew. “We’re going to see your Mother, aren’t we?” She nods as I survey our surroundings. “How are we going to do that? The last time you had to go to the other side.”

“I don’t have to do that anymore. It’s more like a spell… Give me your hands and relax yourself.” I wasn’t sure what she was going to do, but I didn’t think twice. I had complete trust in her.

I did as she said and closed my eyes. “Now, focus on me…” I felt the wind pick up around us. It was whistling and soon, I felt light as a feather. “We’re here.” She mutters as I open my eyes.

We were in the middle of the forest. But not just any forest… There was no greenery, simply white. “Now, don’t let go of me or you’ll go back.” She adds, linking her arm with mine.

            I nod. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”

She smiles as we start to walk deeper into the woods. The farther we go, the brighter everything is. It was hard for my eyes to adjust to the bright lights, but eventually, they did. She stopped when she reached an opening. “Mother? Are you here?” She asks into the wind.

I was expecting a ghostly figure to appear, since that’s kind of what happened last time, but it didn’t. Instead, just a voice. “Of course, I am. I am everywhere.” She says, sweetly.

Grace responds. “Hello, Mother. I came with a question.”

“Aw, of course. I see you’ve brought Elijah with you. How nice to see you, my dear. I felt your bond wake earlier, congratulations.”

“Thank you.” I add as Grace continues. “Mother, Elijah did meet his soul mate earlier, Erika… But we found out she’s bonded to someone else… Kol.”

            Mother Nature hesitated. “Yes… Kol…”

“His aura is tainted and I was wondering if you could tell me what that means, exactly? I’ve never seen anything like it before."

“Tainted is simply a trace of dishonor. Since Kol became a vampire, he’s been, well, difficult to control… He has done many dishonorable things in his time simply because he was angry. I know it may seem odd that Niklaus never had this in his aura, but he always had you, Elijah… You kept him from losing his humanity… Granted, he didn’t have much, but having little is better than having none.”

Grace nods. “Makes sense… So, why did you bond them both to her?”

“I’m sorry, my child. I did not do this. This was the universe’s dealings and I’m afraid there is nothing I can do to fix it. Neither can you. This must be settled between Elijah, Kol, and Erika. Ultimately, it will be Erika’s choice. Not so much her human choice, but her heart’s choice. Elijah and Kol will each have an equal chance. I know it seems like a competition, but it isn’t. Erika is quite a powerful young lady and very sweet at that. Her heart will make the right decision and when it does, I promise, you’ll know.”

And once again, I’m competing for happiness… What have I done to the universe for it to continue to punish me? I am the good brother… All I’ve ever wanted was for my family to be together again… To be happy… To have hope.

“What happens to the person that her heart doesn’t choose?” Grace asks.

“The bond will die. And I will be given the chance to bond them to someone else… I’m so sorry, my children. Elijah, I know you deserve to be happy, but be patient. If it was up to me, Kol would be gone and given to someone else… I must go now and so do you… I’ll always be with you. And Elijah, good luck.”

Grace held both my hands again as the wind picked up and before long, we were back.

She let go of me with saddened eyes. “Oh, Elijah, I’m so sorry… If there was anything I could do, you know I would! I would do anything.”

I give her a hopeful smile. “This is no one’s fault, Grace. And it certainly isn’t yours. I may have just came back this morning, but ever since I showed up, I feel like you’re trying to take over my position. I am the nobleman of the family, Grace. And I’ve babysat my siblings a long time, I don’t need you to take on that responsibility. I know how you think and you don’t owe me anything. Everything I’ve done, I’ve done out of love. You are my best friend and you always will be… Don’t take time away from your happiness for me. Live it to the fullest, you deserve every moment.”

I stand and start back into the house. “I won’t be happy until you are.” I hear her mutter under her breath. I pause and turn back to her. “So angelic… You know, I couldn’t believe you were bonded to my brother all those centuries ago, but it turns out, all those tales of angels and demons are untrue. They don’t hate each other. They make each other better. Which is exactly what you’ve done to Niklaus. One day, I hope to love someone as much as you love him. It would be a blessing, you know? I have a feeling that day will come, but we’ll just have to be patient, won’t we?” She smiles as I turn and head back into the house.

My happiness was sitting with Stefan in the parlor. And it killed me to think that maybe she wasn’t mine… Maybe she was meant for Kol and that scared me. This could cause me to be exactly like my brother. If I lost her, I may lose my humanity and that was the thing that I was really afraid of.
