I'm sure by now everyone knows how amazing Shawn Mendes' performance was at the VMAs this past week. I mean, he literally made it rain! It was absolute fire on that stage and the show couldn't have opened better but even with that incredible performance, there was a different question fans had: What happened to his girlfriend that night?
If you've been living under a rock and don't know, Shawn has been dating a New York dance team choreographer, Coppélia Nichols for around two months and appear to be getting serious as it's rumored that they're already making plans for her to come to Toronto to meet his family. The night of the VMAs, Shawn surprised us all by showing up with her on his arm for the first time. Both of them looked stunning but after a little while, Coppélia rushed off the carpet, leaving Shawn on his own.
Shawn offered no explanation in the interviews following but posted this picture a bit after:

Which got fans increasingly worried. It obviously wasn't something to do with the couple themselves as they were seen multiple times during the show, most notably watching Panic! At The Disco, one of Coppélia's favorite bands, perform and Coppélia fangirling when Brendon Urie gave her one of the poker chips he was handing out and kissed her hand. As well as Coppélia posting a loving slideshow of pictures from Shawn's performance after the show.
A representative for Shawn has told us that Coppélia suffers from a severe anxiety disorder and apparently had an attack due to the overwhelming red carpet atmosphere. While neither Shawn or Coppélia have confirmed or denied this, this seems to be the best explanation we have. If that is the case, I think I speak for a lot of fans when I say that we appreciate Coppélia for risking her health just to show support for her boyfriend and we all wish we had her strength.
