CHAPTER TWO

Some People Just Want To Watch The World Burn

_____________

RYAN NOTICED a pattern. One he did not appreciate. He failed to understand it much when he was younger, but it became clear as day the moment he enrolled in the Salvatore School, even more so when he found himself in the counselor's office early Saturday morning.

Mornings were already not Ryan's thing. Now they wanted to make them worse by adults preaching at him for something he did not do.

"Tell me, Ryan. Are you and your sister close?" Emma Tig, a dark haired, English woman and the school's counselor, questioned from where she sat across from the Mikaelson boy.

Ryan quirked a brow as he rested against one of the plush chairs in the room. "What kind of question is that? Of course we are."

Emma stared at him, not sparing a glance at the clipboard set on her crossed knees. "So close as to tell you everything about her day?" she probed.

Ryan withheld the remark that wanted to escape. Instead, he kept his answers vague and dripped in annoyance. "Is this about her flirtation with Black Magic? Because, like I told Dr. Saltzman, I had nothing to do with it," he said, crossing his arms over his t-shirt that showed a yellow Stallion printed over the fabric. The school's mascot.

"Which I'm getting a sense is the truth," Emma voiced. "Both you and Hope can agree to that, at least."

Ryan almost rolled his eyes. Almost. "Do you want to hear me say that I don't agree with my sister performing Black Magic? Fine, I don't. It was stupid on her part, but her part – alone. So, why am I being interrogated?"

Emma sighed. "This is not an interrogation, Ryan. I simply want to do my job and keep this school, and the students inside of it, safe. That includes you and your sister."

"Well, I can tell you one thing," Ryan started and pushed himself to stand, "I have to go to the bathroom. And unless you want to keep me from doing so, I'm just gonna go." He made his way across the room to leave, but he paused when the counselor spoke.

"Do keep an eye on your sister," Emma proceeded. "She's headed down a dangerous path, and I don't want to see her drag you down with her."

Ryan ground his teeth together and looked back toward her. "Trust me. Hope isn't dragging me anywhere." He then turned to snatch the door open and strode out of the room without another word.
