CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVENThis is Why We Don't Entrust Plans to Muppet Babies

"Can't I just, like – skip Coven Day?"
THE QUESTION slipped through Ryan's lips as he lounged in a small, tastefully decorated living room. He leaned into the cushioned chair beneath him, dropping his head onto the high back to glance up at the vaulted ceiling. The place looked the same as it did the last time he visited months earlier. Although, he had been there in person and not a collection of magically transported particles.
"Ryan, you need to stay connected with the witches of your school," Davina Claire – Mikaelson voiced from where she sat on the couch to her nephew's right. "You're with them nine months out of the year."
Ryan sighed, adjusting his head to meet his aunt's gaze. "Yeah, but it's not like I actually have a coven."
Davina's lips twitched into a light smile. "I don't know. From what I hear, you have formed quite a powerful one."
Ryan leaned forward with creased brows. "What? I don't..." his expression slacked when the realization dawned on him, "you've been talking to Mom."
Davina gave him a flat look. "I've been friends with Ray for a long time. There's very little I don't know." She clasped her hands together and rested her forearms on her bent knees. "While it might not be traditional, you and the Saltzman girls are your own coven. Which is honestly a good thing. I wish I would've had that when I was your age."
"But the school makes the whole thing weird," Ryan groaned out. "They set up booths with posters and stuff about the separate covens. It's like some strange science fair."
Davina pressed her lips together to suppress the laughter that wanted to escape. "It's a chance for all the covens to get to know one another." She released a short breath when the boy's scrunched expression failed to falter. "Go to Coven Day and tough it out. You'll be fine."
"But..."
"Listen to your aunt, little king," the voice of Kol Mikaelson cut through the air, before the Original vampire himself strode into the room. He walked over to the couch and dropped onto the cushions next to his wife. "Besides, Coven Day should be a breeze. You're the most powerful witch in the world. Not only are you a Mikaelson witch, but you're a tribrid. Are we forgetting that you defeated a New Orleans ancestor when you were five years old?" He looked to the woman at his side and gave her an apologetic look. "Sorry, love."
Davina smiled toward him. "No need to apologize. And Kol's right," she stated, returning her gaze back to her nephew. "That day showed everyone how much potential you possessed. Not many five-year-olds can take on an ancestor by themselves."
