CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

This Year Will Be Different

______________________

LATER THAT afternoon when Mystic Falls High released their students, Ryan and Hope returned to help Alaric disposed of the dead troll's body. During that time, Ryan decided to give his sister a little space. He realized that the lack of recognition from those she knew bothered her, more than she let on. Hope needed time to come to terms with her new predicament.

It hurt Ryan that no one remembered Hope. She did not deserve that. She jumped into Malivore to save everyone, thinking that she would never return. Now that she did, she had to deal with the entire world forgetting that she existed. Their family included.

If he thought that it would help, Ryan would have tried to explain the situation to his parents. But, he did not know if it could. Even if he told them, they would never regain their memories. More people would get hurt, and the Mikaelson family deserved a break.

Ryan and Hope made their way through the school to meet with Alaric at the entrance of the basement. They followed him down into the underground space, carrying the supplies they would need to get rid of the troll.

"There's, uh, something I wanna ask," Alaric voiced as they neared the bottom of the stairs. "You know, when we were fighting, how'd I know to throw that bolt to you?" He stopped and turned to face the Mikaelson girl. "It was like muscle memory." Hope did not say a word. "We've fought together before, haven't we?" His eyes shifted between both siblings.

Ryan pressed his lips together, forcing himself to stay quiet.

Hope let out a humorous laugh, while it was supposed to sound humorous. "What? That seems totally impossible."

"Yeah, except I live in a world where a creature named Malivore can erase people from your memory," Alaric retorted and set his attention on Ryan. "I also know that you don't trust people easily, and you've been at her side all day. You know her, don't you?" Ryan kept his mouth shut. "I'll take that as a yes."

"Even if we told you, it wouldn't change anything," Hope exclaimed to the man. "Okay? It wouldn't bring your memories back. It would just be words. Leaving will be easier if you don't know."

Ryan snapped to his sister. She made sly comments like that all day, and it started to get on his nerves. "Stop saying that," he said, causing her to look at him. "You're not leaving. And if you do, I'm going with you."

Hope sighed. "Ryan, can we have this conversation later," she hissed, sending sharp nod to their former headmaster.

"I think we need to have it now. Either you don't leave, or I'm coming with you," Ryan told her.
