Chapter 3 - meeting him

Tris P.O.V

"Hello my name is Eric." Said a man that was full tattoos and piercings. "I am one of the main dauntless leaders and for the transfers I will be one of your instructors. "But first we have to get inside."

He said it in a tone that made him sound hungry for everyone's fear. Hearing it sent a shiver down my spine.

Then someone from candor said "so how are we meant to get in."

All Eric said in return was "jump. Who's going first."

Everyone went quiet at the question. "I'll do it." I said with a shaky voice, Eric just looked at me and said "ok," then he stood back and waited for me to practically see if there is anything at the bottom of this hole,

I sort of knew that something would be at the bottom because the dauntless do it all the time, after all its their only way in!

As I got up onto the ledge I balanced myself and looked down past my feet and I could see a large hole in the ground but everything inside was pitch black.

I stood there for a few seconds trying to make myself jump but my feet didn't seem to want to move, so I just tried to calm myself but obviously I was standing there for a little too long because all I could hear now was Eric saying "today initiate."

To be honest Eric scared me a bit so when I heard his voice I got closer to the edge and jumped.

As I was falling I felt completely weightless. I could feel the wind snapping my clothes in the breeze, it was almost like for a small second all my thoughts and worries disappeared.

Then I could see what looked like a net come into view.

As I hit the net I bounced and flew up in to the air. A strangled laugh coming out of my mouth.

When I stopped bouncing I laid still on the net for a few minutes still shocked with what I just did. Then I felt the net tug to the side and I knew I had to get up, so I crawled to the edge of the net where a boy who looked around my age had his hand outstretched for me to grab onto.

I gladly put my hand in his and looked up at him, when I saw his face my heart started beating 10 times faster.

As he gently lifted me off the net placing me on the ground I snapped out of my moment not wanting to make it seem obvious that I just nearly had a heat attack looking at him.

He looked me up and down as if he was shocked to see an abnegation transfer but by the look in his eyes he seemed like he knew how I felt!

"What's your name" he said in a soft tone.

"Bea- um"

"Come on!" "Is it a hard name. You can pick a new one if you like but you can't go back." He now said it like he was trying to hurry me along, as if he was trying to show me he had a tough side.

"Um its-" I hesitated a little before saying "Tris it's tris." He looked at me as if he was saying "good choice"

He called out to the other dauntless "the first jumper is Tris" then everyone starting pumping their fists and cheering.

I turned around to look at them and when I turned back to look at the boy he was off helping another transfer from erudite get off the net, so I walked over to the dauntless and waited.

"Time gap"

When everyone had got down we all gathered together and the boy finally revealed his name as being "four."

Then Christina shouted out "what like the number?"

I had a feeling he wasn't going to take this well.

"Yes exactly like the number." He said in a calm tone as if he had been asked a million times.

Wow he took that better than I thought.

As four showed us around the dauntless compound I wasn't really concentrating on remembering how to get around and where places were I was just thinking about him.

He was walking in front of me and on the bottom of his neck just where his top ends, I could see the edges of a tattoo which made me want to know more about him.

I think that most of the initiates think Four is intimidating and to stay on his good side.

But I think that I can crack his shell because deep under his stern looks I know he has a soft heart.
