“Jay,” I sniffed. “He’s back.”
“What?”
“I don’t know what to do honestly. I don’t think I want him in my life anymore.”
“Then you need to tell him that.” Justin said on the line. “If you don’t want him in your life, you have to make it clear to him.”
My jaw dropped as an idea came into my mind. What was a better way than to mess with Jason’s mind? I grinned as I thought about my risky but brilliant plan. “Jay, I’ll talk to you later. Thanks for the talk though.”
“Oh okay. Well I’ll talk to you later then.” He said sounding a little disappointed. I frowned. “Skype tonight?” I asked him, smiling and playing with my little charm bracelet he gave me for graduation.
“It’s a date.” He chuckled. We said our goodbyes as we ended the call. I scrolled down my contacts and stopped on Jason’s name. I knew I was playing a dangerous game when my finger tapped on Jason’s number. The thing is, I really don’t want to get back with him. I want get back at him as much as I can, but nothing will ever top off what I went through with him. Playing with his heart was an option, but that seemed really cold.
So was the time when he murdered one of your friends.
“Shay, I wasn’t expecting you to call.” He admitted. I could hear the busy street sounds and the thousands of people in the background. I sighed.
“I just want to talk things out, just me and you.”
“Really. Are you sure?”
“Never been so sure about anything in my life.”
“But you have been sure about our relationship.” He chuckled. I grimaced. “Sure.” I forced out. Was he trying to flirt and be funny? He didn’t really succeed at it.
“Can you meet me?” He asked.
“Now?”
He hesitated, “If you can.”
“I can.” I said, getting up from my bed and slipping on my black converse. He told me where to meet him and hung up. I threw my shoulder purse on and quickly walked out the room. I could hear Lux messing around in her room, but I didn’t know where Flame was.
I tiptoed through the hallway and into the living room, right by the door. Before I could place my hand around the doorknob, I heard a chuckle from behind me.
“Going somewhere?”
I turned around and saw Flame. My heart was beating rapidly beneath my chest. I bit my lip and forced a smile on my tired face. “Yeah, I just need some air.”
“Do you need me to come with you?”
“No!” I said quickly, regretting it. I saw the look of confusing on his face. “Okay, well just call if you need me.” He held out his hand and I stared at it perplexed. “Give me your phone.” He raised his eyebrow as he put emphasis on phone.
“W-Why?” I asked, checking my pocket to make sure I had it.
“So I can put my number in it, silly.” I sighed, “Oh, sorry. Here.” I handed him my phone after unlocking it. When he was finished, he spoke up again. “I know you’re still a little shaken up about he-who-should-not-be-named, but if anything ever goes down, don’t hesitate to call me.”
“Yeah, thanks.” I smiled before I strolled out the room.
The place where Jason wanted to meet wasn’t hard to find. It was exactly across the street from Lux’s apartment. I walked in the small diner and looked around the room for Jason. Turning my head to the right, I spotted him sitting in a large booth with a plate of fries in front of him. I walked over casually and smiled when he looked up and saw me coming.
“Bae.” He spoke, getting up and giving me a kiss on my cheek.
No matter how mixed up my feelings are about him, I couldn’t hide the faint blush that was forming on my cheeks.
“Hey, Jase.” I blinked. I sat down and he followed. He slid the dish of fries across the table towards me. I picked up one fry and dipped it in the ketchup, looking at him through the pieces of hair that fell over my face. I held in my breath when he leaned over the table and put the pieces of hair behind my ear.
“I miss this. I miss having you to talk to when shit’s going on in my life.” He spoke, as his eyes never left mine. “I miss the two of us laying down in your room on your bed. I miss texting you in the middle of the night. I miss us spending time together. I hope that we could continue our broken relationship and forget about the past. Just start over.”
Part of me wanted to refuse everything that he said. How could we continue and forget about the past? How could we just forget that he’s a criminal; killing people and escaping out of prison. How could we ever have a normal relationship while he’s America’s Most Wanted? How does it work?
But that’s the thing, something like that doesn’t work. It can’t, it’s too complicated.
“How do we start over?” I asked him, pushing the fries away from me. He licked his lips and sighed. “We can start from scratch. I know this will work because I believe in us.”
I stayed silent. His words were making a huge impact on how I was feeling about him at the moment. Instead of making a comment on that, I went to a different subject.
“Jason, you escaped, right?”
“Y-Yeah…” He was taken back by my question. I saw him tense up as he sat back. “Just…keep it low.” He said as he whispered.
“Aren’t the police looking for you?”
“Not in New York. This is something that I wanted to talk to you about. My time is limited here; I can’t stay here for long. Do you want to come with me?”
“I-” I started but he cut me off.
“I can’t lose you again. I don’t want to go anywhere else without you. You’re my only happiness and I love you, Shay!”
