...A week and a half later...

Momoko's POV

It's now been a week and five days since we've all been in the hospital, and today Miyako and I are being released. Buttercup still hasn't woken up yet, and she isn't doing any better than when she arrived. Her wounds haven't healed, her scars haven't closed, and her bruises and swelling haven't gone down at all. The doctors have no clue why she hasn't gotten any better, and neither do we.

We've had to lie to our teachers and our families about the truth. Somehow along the way we convinced them we were jumped when walking around in a bad area outside of town, and that we were able to escape before they did anything horrible to us if it weren't for Kaoru holding them off so we had enough time to run away.

Meanwhile, the boys have been A-wall after school each day planning a return party for us, and they even started cutting gym class. Miyako and I figured that whatever it was, it was going to be really special.

It's nighttime now, and for the first time in a really long time - about four years - Kaoru isn't sleeping in our room. It felt lonely and empty, and Miyako and I are both awake texting our boyfriends in hopes to find some sort of comfort.

"Hey, Momoko?" Miyako whispers from her corner of the room. I look up over my blankets and lean against my hot pink headboard.

"Yeah?"

"I'm really worried about Kaoru. I can't sleep without her here."

"I know, neither can I," I speak up in a regular volume of voice. We both stand and walk over to Kaoru's bed, sitting on either end of it under the lime green covers.

"But I'm even more worried about Tadashi. He hasn't been very social at all, and he's always alone in the woods, coming home at dawn just in time to get ready for school."

"Don't worry about him. He doesn't act like it, but Tadashi loves Kaoru more than anyone. He's staying strong for her in the only way he can," I explain to her. "And anyways, you know he isn't very emotional and doesn't express his feelings to us or his brothers. Being alone is the only way he can cry and mourn and cope with all of this. And Kaoru is no different. She's stronger than any person I've known. She'll get through this, whatever it is."

She nods sadly and slowly glances down at her buzzing phone, indicating a text from Seitarou.

"You're right, Momo. I'm probably just thinking about it too much. Kaoru is our sister, after all, and she takes on a lot just to save our feelings from being hurt, she's never been weak. And this is no different."

She picks up her phone and replies to the message that made her smile brightly through the pain I know she's feeling. Neither of us are very strong emotionally, mentally, or psychically, and Kaoru is more than able in all three, even though she's the youngest out of all of us.

I rest my hand on Miyako's shoulder and she looks at me with mist covering her eyes.

"Kaoru Matsubara is a strong-willed and extremely able girl. She's got a fiery personality and a huge heart, even though she guards it as if it were life or death. She hasn't failed us before and she won't fail us now. Remember what the Professor said?"
