Alex ran into the hospital and up to the desk. The lady at the computer looked up to him and immediately frowned.

Alex had been there enough times for them to recognize him. She nodded silently and he thanked her before rushing up to his mother's room.

He put a hand on her doorknob and took a deep breath, hoping she was still there to talk to.

The twisted the door open and stepped inside.

His mother, Rachel, sat on the hospital bed. She looked weak and pale but her eyes still gleamed that determined and strong glow Alex and grown to love.

She looked over to him and gasped before coughing into her arm. Alex walked to her side and sat down at the edge of her bed.

"A-Alex! You weren't supposed to be here!" She sputtered out, nervous.

"Well, here I am..." Alex did some unenthusiastic jazz hands, his face full of worry.

She frowned, and beckoned him over. He hesitantly walked over and she pulled him into a hug.

"How's my little lion doing?" She whispered.

"He's doing alright mom, keeping up the positive attitude for you," Alex chuckled sadly and Rachel shifted uncomfortably on the bed.

"Well, I'm glad you are doing well. I'm sure you know my days are limited but..." She trailed off, making sure Alex wasn't on the brink of a breakdown yet.

"...but know that I will always love you. Despite what will happen," she finished.

Alex was silent for a moment and then, "Mom that's the most cheesy thing you've said."

"Oh shut up you," she pinched his cheek gently and Alex sighed.

"How are your friends?"

"They're all good. I'm the last one in the group to discover their talent, go figure. Even the new one I met recently found his out today. I don't know what it is about him but I really like him," Alex explained.

"You like everyone in your group, even that Thomas kid," she deadpanned and Alex grinned shyly.

"W-Well! He's different, I just know it. Would you believe me if I said he was an elemental?"

Rachel gasped and looked curious suddenly.

"He is? What's his name? What type of elemental is he?"

"Yes he is, his name is Aaron, and he's an Ice elemental."

Rachel looked more excited than curious now.

"Oh my sweet baby, that one's a keeper for sure. In more ways than one," Rachel grinned but then coughed violently in her arm. She pulled away with dark red splatters on her arm.

"Mom? What do you mean?" Alex asked, his cheerful expression replaced with worry once more.

"Trust me Alex, you two will be a lot closer than you think," She smiled her signature smile, despite being right about ready to cross it to the other side.

They sat in comfortable silence. Well more of Alex sitting in that silence, Rachel began to look worse and worse as time went on and she sunk into her hospital bed. She looked the worse she had ever been in years.

"Alex, promise me something," Rachel said suddenly. Alex looked up at her, afraid of what she was going to ask.

"Y-yes?"
