A week after the house disappointment, I stood on the balcony, puffing away on my cigarette, when my phone rang.I answered. "Hello?"
"It's, Wendy, you guys still coming tonight?" She asked.
"Of course, we wouldn't miss it."
"Great, see you then."
After hanging up, I flicked my cigarette over the balcony and walked back inside.
Rebecca sat on the couch, playing on her phone while the kids watched cartoons next to her.
"You guys ready for Blake and Kats engagement party?" I asked.
The kids cheered and Rebecca looked up from her phone. "Since when are you excited for a party?" She asked with a chuckle.
I sat on her lap and put my arms around her shoulders. "I guess I'm happy for them, they both deserve it."
Rebecca kissed my cheek. "That's sweet."
I stood up. "I know. But, enough with the sentimental stuff, you kids ready to show off your awesome new outfits?"
"Yes!" They cheered as they jumped up and ran for their bedroom, I followed close behind.
"What outfits?" Rebecca asked.
"You'll see." I said as I closed the door.
After getting them dressed in their matching outfits, I led them back into the living room. "Surprise!" We said.
Rebecca shook her head and smiled. "You've got to be kidding me."
The kids stood in front of me, wearing matching leather jackets and torn up jeans.
"Isn't that the coolest, yet most adorable thing you've ever seen?" I asked.
Rebecca chuckled as she stood up and joined us in the kitchen.
She knelt down in front of the kids. "Did she talk you into this?"
"Nope, they picked them out all on their own." I said.
"We wanted to look cool like mommy." Anna said.
"Yeah." Max added.
"That's not even the best part." I said.
Rebecca looked at me, slightly confused.
"Show her." I said.
In unison, the kids brandished little pairs of sunglasses from their pockets and put them on, folding their arms over their chests.
I pulled my own pair out and threw them on, mirroring their pose.
Rebecca laughed.
"You're nuts." She said, standing up.
"Dont we look cool, mommy?" Anna asked.
Rebecca smiled. "Of course you do."
Max and Anna shared a smile and a fist bump.
Rebecca laughed and shook her head.
I held out an extra pair of sunglasses in front of her, a smile tugging at my lips. "You know you wanna join the dark side."
She looked at me for a second before snatching them and putting them on. "Only because I love you guys."
I laughed. "C'mon, guys, time to share our coolness with the world."
