The near future...
I pulled into the cemetery parking lot and turned the car off.
"Are you sure you don't want me to come?" I asked.
Rebecca shook her head. "I appreciate it, but I need to do this alone."
I took her hand in mine and gave it a reassuring squeeze. She gave me a sad smile before leaning over for a quick kiss.
I leaned against the hood of the 'Cuda, puffing away at a cigarette.
Rebecca kneeled down in front of her dads grave, tears rolling down her cheeks.
"Am I interrupting?"
I turned quickly, only to see Rebecca's mom approaching.
"Oh, no. Rebecca just wanted to say a few things to her dad before the party."
Miss June nodded, standing off to the side, arms folded over her chest.
"Smoke?" I offered.
She looked over. "Sure, thanks."
I handed her a cigarette and lit it. She leaned on the car next to me.
"You know, a few years ago, I never would've imagined I'd be here, sharing a cigarette with Miss June."
She exhaled her smoke with a slight chuckle. "Me neither."
She was silent for a minute before speaking up. "Skylar, I love my daughter very much and I've put her through a lot of shit. But, you make her happy, happier than I've ever seen her."
I gave her a small smile. "I try to be the best I can be for her."
She nodded. "Thank you. And I'm sorry for the shit I've put you through over the years. It might've taken me a while to see it, but I'm happy my daughter chose you and I'm proud to call you my daughter-in-law."
"That's means a lot, Miss June, thank you."
She smiled.
Just then, Rebecca walked over, a few tears still running down her cheeks.
"Well, this is an interesting sight." She said.
We laughed a little. "Tell me about it." I replied.
Miss June stomped her cigarette out. "Well, I've got a few things to say to Max, but I'll see you guys at the party."
Rebecca pulled her mom into a hug.
When they pulled apart, Miss June turned to me. "Don't think you're getting away that easily."
I chuckled and pulled her into a quick hug.
We waved her off before heading out.
"So, what'd she have to say?" Rebecca asked.
"Something I never thought I'd hear her say." I replied.
I took her hand in mine and smiled.
We drove the rest of the way in silence...
A few hours later, we pulled into Twist's parking lot. The bar was closed today so we could celebrate Rebecca's birthday.
Everyone seemed to be there already.
A few people greeted us at the door. "Happy birthday, Rebecca." Jen said.
