Author Note:
Sorry for the music in the middle of this, it's more important later on.
I wake up early the next morning. I slowly pull myself away from Zack, in slow, careful, deliberate movements.
When I manage to stand up, I breathe a small sigh of relief, I turn around, my eyes landing on the door...
"Where are you going?" a rough, groggy voice asks as a warm hand closes around my wrist,
"Restroom," I whisper back, not wanting to break the peaceful, lulling, silence. The hand lets go,
"Okay," he mumbles. I walk into the bathroom, shutting the door behind me with a soft click.
I sigh, leaning my head back against the wood. I close my eyes for a moment.
I few deep breaths later, as well as brushing out my [H/L] [H/C] hair, and I walk back in to find Zack sound asleep. I smile slightly at his black hair flopping over his forehead. I cross the room, and gently tug the blanket up to his chin. I brush the hair off his forehead gently. I remember an old song...
"Hmmm hmm, hm," I hum softly.
From the depths of my memories, the words were seared into my memory from singing them countless times.
"When the days are cold,
And the cards all fold,
And the saints we see
Are all made of goldWhen your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood's run staleI want to hide the truth
I want to shelter you
But with the beast inside
There's nowhere we can hideNo matter what we breed
We still are made of greedThis is my kingdom come...
This is my kingdom come...When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too closeIt's dark inside
It's where my demons hideIt's where my demons hide
When the curtain's call
Is the last of allWhen the lights fade out...
All the sinners crawl
So they dug your grave
And the masquerade
Will come calling out
At the mess you made.Don't want to let you down
But I am hell bound
Though this is all for you
Don't want to hide the truthNo matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come...This is my kingdom come...
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close,
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hideIt's where my demons hide
They say it's what you make,
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go...Your eyes, they shine so bright
I want to save their light
I can't escape this now,
Unless you show me how. When you feel my heat,
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide.
Don't get too close,
It's dark insideIt's where my demons hide...
It's where my demons hide," I smile softly. It's funny... something I wrote and sung so long ago still being so relevant.I lean back, staring at Zack for a moment. I let my eyes close halfway, remembering the cool piano keys creating sounds to match my own melodies. I miss my piano...
I sigh softly, and walk into the kitchen, gratefully finding food and water.
"You're up," the calm voice makes me jump in shock, I glance over my shoulder,
"Yeah. Come eat?" I offer, giving Zack a small smile. He ignores it, grabbing his scythe, then he reaches into his pocket.
He sets down a bag of money with a small thump, making the coins clink together.
"There's a market a little ways away. As long as you take your knife with you, and are careful, you can go get something," he mutters, before walking out the door with a loud bang.
I smile and gently tuck the bag of coin into the pocket with the knife.
I finish eating, and clean up my mess.
I hesitate, thinking for a few minutes before grabbing a piece of paper.
I write only two words;
Sorry, goodbye.
I pull out the small bag of coin and use it to weigh the paper down. I reach into my pocket for the knife and pull it out by its handle. I look at it for a second...
My heart twists painfully at the thought of letting it go. I clutch it to my chest before slipping it back into my pocket.
I walk out the door, closing it with a quiet click.
I slip out into the city, heading toward where Zack said the marketplace was. I'll just tell a guard who I am, and they'll take me to the palace.
I slip easily into the bustling crowds, pulled along by the sea of people. After a few minutes, I realize it would be impossible to spot a guard, much less make it over to them.
I quickly slip into one of the alleyways.
"Come here, kid!" I flinch at the irritated, familiar voice. I press myself against the wall, nothing happens, and I curiously peek around a corner to see two young, dirty kids slowly creep up to Zack.
I watch curiously. The elder girl stands protectively in front of her younger brother,
"W-we don't got nothing sir!" she says, her voice shaking.
"I SAID COME HERE!" Zack shouts, and she flinches, he... has literally no tack.
She gets within arms reach, and Zack's arm swings.
She flinches, her eyes shut tightly, clearly expecting him to hit her.
She slowly opens her eyes. Zack holds out a loaf of bread, she hesitates,
"Take it kid," even when being nice, he still sounds angry... She slowly takes the piece of bread, immediately giving some to her brother, and digging in. "Where're your parents?" he asks gruffly,
"Died last winter. Starved in the fields," she says softly,
"Damn royals," Zack growls. The little girl nods slightly,
"Yeah... took our food, the entire harvest too," she says softly. I can't help but feel sick as I remember my own feast last winter, and the amount of food that went to waste... "I heard the princess is missing too," the young girl asks,
"Yup," Zack replies,
"Sir..." the girl starts, hesitating. She takes a deep breath, "Are you an assassin that's gonna kill the princess?" she blurts out all in one breath, Zack stays quiet.
"That's the plan," my blood runs cold.
"Thank you. I know it sounds awful, but she deserves it," the girl whispers. Zack nods,
"Yup," he mutters, I slowly step back, fear pounding through my veins.
The man's words from the day Zack and I met echo in my head;
"MAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNYYYYYYY people would pay a very pretty penny to have this pretty little neck slit"
