Murky water fell across my face, acting as a filter to dull the waters natural colour. Plastic danced in the ocean, mocking any marine life that swam elegantly by.
In that moment, a beautiful majestic Stingray glided past my face. But plastic surrounded the poor creature. Almost suffocating it just be it's mere presence.
How could the human race be so cruel, dumping its man made waste on another creatures habitat, it's like a person going to throw his garbage on another beings house. It's just wrong!
The stingray flew through the water, but meeting the plastic panicked and struggled until it was tied up in plastic bags and containers. Concerned for the health of the poor creature I swam at my fastest pace, not concerned for my own wellbeing. I approached the stingray with slight caution.
Plastic bags covered almost its entire body, scared for its life I started to rapidly untie the knots of plastic that was suffocating the creature. Successfully I got bags off only to find a piece of plastic that had penetrated its skin. I started to panic! What should I do? Should I take it out? That would be the logical option or should I alert some sort of authorities and say there is a hurt sting ray in this area? I had made my decision...
Swimming past rubbish, I swam to the waters surface, meeting my small boat. I clambered on. Searching for my phone I looked across the oceans surface finding the most devastating thing I could. I quickly took a picture and then called 999.
"Hello?" I asked
"Hello, what's your emergency" a calm sounding lady asked.
"Umm... a... umm I found an injured stingray that has a piece of plastic stuck in its side. I think it's dying. I didn't know weather to take out the plastic or not - I didn't want it to bleed out."
"Ok, you did the right thing in calling. Can you tell me your co-ordinates and I'll get a team out to you right away"
'Yeh okay"
I quickly told her my details and location and waited 15 until the team got here on a boat. They asked me where the sting ray was and I replied that it was among the plethora of plastic. They got there diving team and eventually found the poor creature.
It was alright, he was safe. They had removed the plastic and used some medicine. It was going to be okay.
but then I realised it wasn't okay. I looked along the vast sea and noticed it was almost entirely covered in waste. This has to stop. And it has to stop now!
I looked across the sea and noticed that the plastic covered the sea like a blanket.
It must of been a cold sea to have a blanket this big and thick.
