--Each house will have one zodiac sign (eg. 1st house in Leo)
--Each house will have a planet, multiple planets, or no planets at all (eg. Jupiter in the 1st house, Saturn & Mars in the 3rd house. Empty 4th house.)
Here is what each house stand for:
---------------------
1st house: self, ego, personality
2nd: possessions, wealth, material
3rd: communication, expression
4th: family, home
5th: fun, creativity
6th: health, social services
7th: marriage, partnership
8th: death, reincarnation, psychism
9th: travel, exploration, adventure, education
10th: career
11th: friends, dreams, goals
12th: taboos, secrets, hidden
If you have no PLANETS in a house, then that's an empty house. That does not mean you have no talent in that area, it's just of less importance in your life, supposedly to say. Of all the charts I've seen all had at least an empty house, so fret not.
A stellium is when you have 4+planets in 1 house. That strengthens the importance of that house.
You can find your house placements on astro-charts.com

Using the houses
PLANET EXAMPLE: say if you have mercury in 3rd house, then that's very good. Because the 3rd house is communication and mercury is about communications. That's a good placement
SIGN EXAMPLE: If you had gemini in 3rd house, that's very good also. Because 3rd house=communications, gemini=the best talker of the zodiac. That's a good placement too
A BAD PLACEMENT EXAMPLE: if you had sun and moon in the 12th house, that's a big one. 12 is usually considered to be the least favourable house by many because it deals with secrets and taboos. But then again you shouldn't try to fit your personality with astrology, screw all the bad placements
